While I do not believe a majority of people are racist or that it is a predominately white problem, I also think it is naive to consider racists a 'fringe' group. Most of the people who live in my home town are good people who do not think themselves as racist. But, when actually confronted with another race on their doorstep or neighborhood, the racism is unveiled.

I said racism is unveiled, not most become racist. And my hometown is such that even being a catholic is scandalous. Everything is super nice and neighborly but there is a mean streak that can surprise you as soon as any others come to town. Very few people are outspoken in their bigotry and only talk openly when they can be anonymous.
