acstually tipping at least 10% is considered normal here, anyone who doesn't might be considered a skank, scoundrel, or skrub. I always do, I know it impreses m'ladies
It doesn't really matter if you're poor or not when all your houses have already been bought up by Russians with more money than most African countries.
/u/heavybums. “HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.”
Gotta point out this is in /r/udub, aka the University of Washington, a college based in Seattle.
Seattle has the infamous $15 minimum wage, which means that even though the "yeah you can pay waiters below minimum wage" law remains in full effect, Seattle servers earn a minimum of $10 per hour without tips.
The $2-3 per hour wage people like to throw out when shaming people for not tipping this ain't.
In addition to this, most restaurants near the University are self-service, i.e. order at the counter and get your own water, plus bus your own table when you're done.
I can't think of a single establishment on the Ave that actually offers full service. Pretty much everything is self-serve or that weird hybrid model where you put a number on your table to have your food brought out to you.
You're talking about the teriyaki place next to Schulzty's, right? On that first block north of Campus Parkway with the bank? Is University Kitchen another name change? In my day it was University Teriyaki.
I occasionally miss that place and then remember all the food poisoning and decide to get my munchies elsewhere.
Costas, Jewel of India, Shalimar, Shultzy's, Thai 65, Cultivate, The District, Thaiger Room, Samir's, Cedars**, Finn McCools... that's just off the top of my head.
yes, they have a buffet, but you also can order off of the menu.
*yes, technically not on the ave, but close enough to count.
Yes, but Seattle's real estate market becoming increasingly Californian in scope does not stop the linked discussion from being dishonest about how bad things are for servers without tips.
Pretty much anyone who made poor life choices but isn't willing to have roommates has to live Eastside these days.
I don't remember advocating a dishonest discussion.
Ahh yes, I enjoy being told that I've made bad life choices because I can't afford to live in one of the most expensive parts of one of the most expensive cities in America.
Yeah... I'm a full time student that works around 45 hours a week and I have to share a studio apartment. I don't have any debt, I don't have a car, I live a frugal life, and I still need financial help from my parents.
Probably relax a bit before labeling other people's lives.
Hold up, what?? Have you not considered current students working to support themselves by waiting tables? And going to a "good school" doesn't open doors for everyone
I don't tip. I expect my bill to cover my servers wage
u/heavybums, but it doesn't, you dolt. If restaurants were to pay servers a real wage, menu prices would be higher. So while you think you're taking some sort of high ground on behalf of America's service industry, you're really just getting your food subsidized by the person you think is being treated unjustly.
Tbh, this would be the actual way to take a moral stand against tipping culture. In most American cities, you'd be stuck with Panera as your best option, so it's easier just to stiff the person bringing you your food and drinks.

No it isn't, occasionally if you go somewhere fancier or have really good service, but just for going out you pay the number on the bill.

Only American brands, as they're allowed to pay their staff below the minimum wage as they're 'Apprentice Sandwich Artists' or 'Apprentice Fry Cook'.

Shultzy's.

It's Korean, by the way.

Fuck off
1 CerebralComedian 2017-09-06
There are a few, but you're right. Almost entirely self-serve in some way.
1 Gustie5 2017-09-06
Yeah... there are tons...
1 lolveets 2017-09-06
Since you mentioned Shultzy's in another comment, just pointing out Shultzy's fits under "full service".
1 -absolutego- 2017-09-06
I'd say something about an exception proving the rule but I honest-to-god just forgot about Shultzy's (including how to spell it apparently)
1 lolveets 2017-09-06
I get your point, certainly. Almost everywhere on the Ave is a self-serve-ish model.
Everyone misspells Shultzy's. It "should" have a 'c' in it, based on how most German is spelled, but it's based on the owner's last name.
Source: I work there.

Just to nit pick, you are not allowed to tip at Cultivate.

Shultzy's, Big Time, Finns.
1 skivian 2017-09-06
Then what the shit are you tipping for?
1 Gustie5 2017-09-06
True.
Working full time at $15/hour is also not enough to afford a studio apartment in Seattle though.
1 -absolutego- 2017-09-06

I don't see you anywhere in the linked thread so I'm not sure where I accused you of being dishonest.
That said, if you attended as school as good as the UW and wound up waiting tables I have zero compunctions labeling your life choices as "bad".
1 Gustie5 2017-09-06

1 CaptainXDify 2017-09-06
Doesn't his statement imply the waiting tables part happened after going to the UW, not during or before?
1 pM-me_your_Triggers 2017-09-06
Do note, it's not $15 for most people in Seattle, it is $15 if you work for a company of more than 300 employees
