u/SDIHTD and u/WarSanchez, I take it all back. Before I said that WarSanchez was right but it turns out that WarSanchez is technically wrong. To simplify the sentence,
"Protesting is stupid" is legit. Here "protesting" is a gerund so it's acting like a noun, and is the (singluar) subject of the sentence.
You wanted to add "people" in front of protesting, but because protesting is acting like a noun then "people" needs to be possessive, so the right way to say it as you meant to would be,
"People's protesting is stupid" which is also legit.
What is not legit is "People protesting is stupid" because "people protesting" is not a well-formed gerund phrase, and in this case "protesting" is acting like an adjective modifying "people," which is the subject of the sentence, so it should be are, not is.
u/SDIHTD I apologize for my initially wrong post, but I consider my debt repaid with this post.

I don't like that you linked to your own stupid fight, but you are objectively correct and u/SDIHTD is both wrong and an asshole.

I thought drama one's self was involved in was encouraged to be posted so as to dogpile and humiliate the loser.

If you think I'm wrong, link it over to an academic English or grammar sub.
Your grammar is wrong.

Send me the link to one. I don't visit nerd reddit.
I use random IQ tests online to validate myself.

I don't know any either. But there are subs for trannies that like to wear diapers, I'm sure there's a grammar dork sub.

Correct.
If he wanted to use "is"...he should have left out "people" and just said

Could've avoided it by saying "the act of people protesting x is wrong"

I'm too drunk for this shit. What happened? My eyes are having problems focusing on the words and my critical thinking skills are at -2.
