Just to be clear here, because the gamergate thing is way to confusing: the guy accused of sexual harassment was on the pro-feminist, anti-bouncy titties in video games side of gamergate, right?
Splitting (also called black-and-white thinking or all-or-nothing thinking) is the failure in a person's thinking to bring together the dichotomy of both positive and negative qualities of the self and others into a cohesive, realistic whole. It is a common defense mechanism used by many people. The individual tends to think in extremes (i.e., an individual's actions and motivations are all good or all bad with no middle ground).
The concept of splitting was developed by Ronald Fairbairn in his formulation of object relations theory; it begins as the inability of the infant to combine the fulfilling aspects of the parents (the good object) and their unresponsive aspects (the unsatisfying object) into the same individuals, instead seeing the good and bad as separate.
This is not so much splitting as it is understanding that people pursue goals and agendas that suit them to their own ends and not necessarily that they will remain consistent 100% of the time.
Well I just want to play games without being harassed. Not sure why someone would want to steal nudes from a transgendered person. I think that has more to do with you than with me.

Understandable.
Not sure why someone would want to steal nudes from someone.
Because it threatens someone's personal security and attacks their self-consciousness. It's morein the "what if" of the slippery slope, meaning if someone was really determined they could do way more damage than that.
But why would I want to threaten someone's personal security and attack their... self-conscious? Is that a proper reaction when someone does that to you just because you like to play video games?
Doesn't it seem a little ridiculous to send death threats to people just because they like to play video games? That doesn't seem a bit toxic to you?

No but the drama sub does this too with the "kys" subculture. Video gaming seems to be the most common medium for people to tell people to die or that they're going to skip rope with the other person's entrails.

Yes part of Gamergate was journalists found out they could make a lot of money by saying negative things about gamers. How many of those death threats were real and how many were just made up? I haven't heard about any of them being real. Yes if you say nasty things about strangers some of them might be upset. There were, of course, all the threats that Zoe Quinn made in order to silence her victims.

That is the only side of gamergate. The other side is people peacefully playing games at home.

"i just wanna play games", they said, spending many hours a week figuring out how to use a rootkit to steal high-profile TERFs' nudes
