I think it's fair to blame the mayor of charlottesville who told the police to stand down and then pulled the permit for the demonstration.
Like it or not the alt-right groups had permission to be there, the leftists didn't. Had they not been there to counter protest there would have been no death.
One, leftists had literally just attacked the guy's car.
Two, they'd spent a year loudly proclaiming their right to attack anyone they say is a Nazi. And then spent weeks calling these people Nazis, which is at this point the same as declaring their intention to commit violence against them.
People would be so on edge, if the left didn't loudly and constantly fantasize about committing political violence.
