That is the dumbest thing I’ve read on Reddit in a long time. Is this pie, are you trolling, because if not you really need to lay off the fat right wing bullshit.
I actually agree that removing all the tax benefits isn’t good, but not all masters should receive that. It should be - sliding scale based on what degrees are needed the most at the time you start. If we need more teachers than teachers get a higher benefit, but an aerospace engineer or mathematician wouldn’t get as much. It would only apply for the average time needed to obtain the higher degree in that field, so if you take a couple years extra you could lose a portion of that benefit.
Tax money is spent on things that won’t benefit you, that’s kind of how it works. They need the money, unlike say people who own private jets who are getting a tax break.
They closed a "loophole" for recent students that havn't made any money yet you retard. This isn't a loophole, its an incentive for higher education so more people don't end up like you.
It overproduces PhD's for which there is not enough demand in the market, especially in liberal arts departments. Increasing taxes on grad students would be disastrous, though, because it also affects those PhD's that aren't worthless.
If by disasterous you mean fantastic. Currently uni charges whatever the hell they want because uncle Sam pays for it all. Neither uni or student have any incentive to keep costs down. American tax payers get screwed as a result.
This puts pressure on uni to fix the bubble we are in.
They either lower costs, increase pay or admit less students. The Democrat party won't allow them to admit less students, and neither of the other 2 options are bad for anyone except uni.
Absolutely nothing is stopping them from claiming the tuition that they aren't charging these students is now suddenly 100$. Plus any program that produces useful majors will likely be able to offset this, as they generally have cash on hand.
Yep, we have entire degree programs that exist solely for the sake of making said degree programs. And degree programs that are more of a psudeo-scientific religion than anything resembling actual science. Universities have been needing to cut for a long time now. We waste tons of money on stupid shit like, "A feminist glaciology framework for global environmental change research".
Fuck you're retarded. Use stock options if you need to make a comparison. Sales tax doesn't make sense. There is no set price for retail. On sale is a meaningless marketing phrase.
That "on sale" and "discount" are meaningless terms. If the school wants to charge x amount for graduate student tuition then that's what they should get taxed on.
And they are charging the student $0, so they should get taxed on that. In other words they shouldn’t have to pay tax on the value of the grant, just as shoppers shouldn’t have to pay taxes on the difference between the sale and non-sale price of their purchases.
No, they aren’t. They are saying “you get free tuition here as a grad student.” They don’t pay them the cost of tuition and then bill them for the same amount.
I'm sure Harvard's endowment can cover paying tax on their graduate tuition instead of pushing it off onto their students. But schools are pretty greedy and tend to treat graduate students like shit so I wouldn't be surprised if lots of them got hit hard by this.
I'd still blame the schools 100%, though. They're just upset that they can't skirt around paying taxes on the tuition waivers anymore.
Nah, we should just trap them in gas chambers and kill them all for even daring to choose anything but mathematics. Compsci and medical science might be ok but anything else goes straight to the camps.
There are plenty of fields which have right wing graduates thoughm they just go and actually earn money in the private sector. It's just that academia is chocked with commies. I think a tax on academics would be more suitable
encourage young people to partake in morally abhorrent activities and then when they inevitably end up with a mental illness/personality disorder, profit off overpriced useless SSRIs/SNRIs and $100 for 15 minutes psychiatrist sessions

Fuck. Better title: Everyone who thinks your taxes should be raised get upset when their taxes get raised.

It must be a confusing time to have brain damage.

I'm sorry I can't hear you through the sound of my tax burden going down.

Dont worry, Starbucks will still hire you without your graduate degree in gender studies.
1 rockidol 2017-11-19
You think graduate students are mostly gender studies students?
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
I think current academia has allowed itself to be infected and ultimately consumed by gender studies so you're all basically the same thing now.

r/science has a political hit piece stickied right now. Closing your eyes and pretending it's not happening doesn't make it less real.
1 rockidol 2017-11-19
Accurate reporting is not a political hitpiece.
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
Which part of that hit piece is accurate?
1 AggressiveChimp 2017-11-19
The part that calls you a vodka swilling agenda posting slavtard.
1 rockidol 2017-11-19
All of it
1 Gothmog26 2017-11-19
That's nice. Where's the accurate reporting?
1 jubbergun 2017-11-19
It doesn't matter if it's "accurate" or not. Their own rules forbid that kind of post.

How can a human being be this retarded? I'm honestly upset you can only kill yourself once.

I'm sure decent schools will offset the increased tax burden for actually useful majors.

1 Gothmog26 2017-11-19
Woman's studies degrees are a negative. You are literally less employable with one than before you wasted your parent', and the government's money.

1 rockidol 2017-11-19
Except they would t be taxed on actual income earned, so...
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
Magic money sure has made a comeback in socialist circles.
1 rockidol 2017-11-19
It’s not magic money, they’re giving them a discount on tuition
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
That they would otherwise have to pay.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
Good point, we should all pay sales tax on the full price of items that are on sale.
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
We pay sales tax based on what a good changed hands for. "On sale" is usually just a marketing gimmick.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
But I thought you cared about taxing people on what they would have paid without getting a discount?
Damn, son. You can’t even be bothered to hold onto your principles for the span of two consecutive posts.
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
Fuck you're retarded. Use stock options if you need to make a comparison. Sales tax doesn't make sense. There is no set price for retail. On sale is a meaningless marketing phrase.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
There’s no set price for tuition either, nitwit. Schools are free to charge what they want.
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
Holy shit, the school sets the price moron.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
And the store sets the price for the goods they sell, what’s your point?
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
That "on sale" and "discount" are meaningless terms. If the school wants to charge x amount for graduate student tuition then that's what they should get taxed on.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19

They are charging it tho.
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
No, they aren’t. They are saying “you get free tuition here as a grad student.” They don’t pay them the cost of tuition and then bill them for the same amount.
1 LoudGoatsfoot 2017-11-19
Not free when you have to work for it
1 Nerdlinger 2017-11-19
You have to work for your degree whether you are charged for the tuition or not.
1 im-a-koala 2017-11-19
They are. Where do you think the grant money comes from? Magic money land?
School gets grant. School "pays" the grant to the student in the form of a waiver. School pays no taxes.
Now they can't do the last part.
They could just reduce the tuition and not charge it to the grant. But they don't want to because $$$.
1 im-a-koala 2017-11-19
Or the school can pay tax on the tuition.
I'm sure Harvard's endowment can cover paying tax on their graduate tuition instead of pushing it off onto their students. But schools are pretty greedy and tend to treat graduate students like shit so I wouldn't be surprised if lots of them got hit hard by this.
