We all tend to overestimate our own ability to read other people, until we're humbled by adverse experiences into realizing just how gray the line is. I've personally known an individual who was victimized because online comments on chats or forums directed at them weren't taken seriously enough. Everyone blew it off as not a serious thing, because they'd seen so many non-serious threats made before. Everything is interpreted as "it's probably a joke". And yes, 99% of the time, it is. But that shouldn't be acceptable because it molds our minds to not take actual threats to safety seriously. You might not care about these kinds of things at the moment, but if it ever happened to someone close to you it might change your perspective. People should feel afraid to make joking threats online or comments that encourage self-harm. They should feel obligated to think twice on such matters. People should feel afraid to make joking threats online or comments that encourage self-harm. They should feel obligated to think twice on such matters. We've enabled predatory behavior online to be very difficult to detect, because we've overestimated our ability to discern unserious comments made by people with limited self-control/a lack of decency vs. actual threats or inciting of self-harm. Maybe I'm the one of the few who cares about this subject, but that should not be the case. And it should not require an individual feeling genuinely threatened or personally in fear for their safety for this issue to be taken seriously. To be clear: I do genuinely believe that reddit site rules were violated by the comments that you made. So don't confuse that with my admitting to not feeling personally unsafe. And I do think there is a genuine case for Admins to take action and apply consequences to you. Ultimately what they do is up to them, though and I can't predict what will actually happen. Do I actually think any laws were broken? No. Do I actually fear for my safety? No. Am I actually personally offended at what you wrote? No. Do I actually think the Admins will ban you? Probably not, but I can't be sure. I don't and can't speak for them. But my personal feelings or interpretations shouldn't be the center of this subject. It is larger than me and it is ridiculous that so many people brush it off as an un-serious matter. They err on the side of "it's probably a joke", rather than "let's just never go there". And that is a problem.
