In NCAA college football, the playoffs are decided by a selection committee. Only four teams are chosen out of a potential few hundred. Decisions are based on wins and losses, strength of schedule, raw data and intangibles. The selection will ALWAYS be controversial because only four teams get in, meaning at least a couple of very solid teams are going to get left out.
This year, Alabama was selected over Ohio State. Many argue that Alabama was the worse team throughout the year and Ohio State got snubbed. This argument is compounded by the fact that there is a large stakeholder interest in Alabama and the conference that the school plays in (Southeast Conference, or SEC).
The counterargument is that Ohio State was left out to avoid picking two teams from the same conference (Big Ten).
