That's because the fundamentalists don't bother interacting with people like them, so they learn most of their Islamic ideology from Qur'anists/progressive Muslims who are considered disbelievers by the majority of other Muslims.

For anyone wondering why apostates are supposed to be killed if that verse exists, it's because scholars have agreed that "There is no compulsion in religion" means there is no compulsion to enter the religion, so if you weren't already a Muslim, you're not supposed to be forced to enter it, according to this verse (some scholars say that this ayah no longer applies, and was abrogated by another verse, but that's for another time).
Here's one scholar explaining it. I'll translate the relevant portion:
"No compulsion in religion" is for entering [Islam], no one is forced to enter Islam, entering is voluntary. As for if someone enters and knows that it's the truth and acknowleges that, and then leaves, this [apostate] attacks the faith and stirs discord in it and calls for others [to leave by leaving it], so it is necessary to kill him.
(There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, "Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Whoever Allah blinds his heart and seals his hearing and sight, then he will not benefit from being forced to embrace Islam.''
