Last year's node.js drama? Just rewrite it in Rust!
85 2018-01-05 by bG9sIG5pY2UgdHJ5Cg
If you pay attention to the node.js world you might remember a bunch of drama surrounding Ashley Williams last year. If not, don't worry, just read this for all your juicy gossip needs. TLDR Code of Conduct champion discriminates kind of a lot but it's okay because she's only discriminating against bad races and bad genders.
I bet you're sad all that drama is over and done. Don't worry! She's just been made head of the Rust community team! Some initial concerns raised there which I sadly missed were deleted by mods because of either they were "over the line" or "we were just heading the thread off at the pass", depending on what mood the mod is in when you ask. Redditors are advised that negative criticism of project leadership is strictly forbidden.
This immediately calms everyone down and doesn't make everything worse jk lol
Don't worry though the mods have definitely given a PERFECTLY GOOD way for people to discuss their concerns. Just email the mod team privately and don't say anything in public at all ever. Problem solved.
EDIT: The "welcome" thread has since been locked, but a well-meaning rustacean is trying to "reduce the drama" by creating another thread about it. This is probably a really good idea.

A woman who was on the board of a programming language thing used to tweet about how wypipo/men suck, and someone filed a complaint about it.
A few months later, she's made head of the community team for a different language. People start arguing because they're concerned about her opinions concerning wypipo/men.

The original drama from a year ago involved a person named Rod Vagg.

With all that productivity, I bet there's a lot of exciting new things being written in Rust, right? Is it up there with Haskell in terms of getting shit done yet?

Unironically, yes, but mostly because it's backed by Mozilla. Parts of Firefox are written in it.

Its kind of upsetting to me when people who mainly do node call themselves "programmers", because its not a proper language, and requires no skill or knowledge to use. You simply google what you want to do and npm install the package / copy the stack overflow answer to snap your code together like legos.
At pretty much all serious coding companies, stack overflow is blacklisted because the people who need to use it regularly are not cut out to be programmers.
1 old_grumpy_grandpa 2018-01-05
You do that in all programming languages, the only thing that changes is how many edits and fuck ups it takes to get when you want to go.
1 UpvoteIfYouDare 2018-01-05
Code monkeys do that. The proper thing to do is look through a multitude of answers to understand the problem domain, then apply the proper solution (which is sometimes a copy of an answer).
1 old_grumpy_grandpa 2018-01-05
It depends on how much time you have and how important the task is.
Control loop of a nuclear reactor? Better understand what you are doing.
Making user input lower case? No big deal if you copy.
1 UpvoteIfYouDare 2018-01-05
True, I was more talking about copying chunks of code. However, I typically make a point of trying to understand what's going on before using anyone else's code, at the very least to develop my own analytical skills.
1 yourmumsanargonian 2018-01-05
How can I find a non-serious coding company to join? I'm getting tired of all of this serious shit.

I dunno, I always thought JS was such a shitty language that node js programmers would need to be self-hating gods among men.
Yeah, cause it's a shit language and you can't solve even simple problems yourself.

Ed Gein
Edward Theodore Gein (; August 27, 1906 – July 26, 1984), also known as The Butcher of Plainfield, was an American murderer and body snatcher. His crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety after authorities discovered that Gein had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. Gein confessed to killing two women – tavern owner Mary Hogan in 1954, and a Plainfield hardware store owner, Bernice Worden in 1957. Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined to a mental health facility.

And linux what percentage of computers?
Visibly SJW and no PR are what make one thing break into mainstream.
1 UpvoteIfYouDare 2018-01-05
Are you high? Android makes up about 85% of the smartphone market and around 80% of the enterprise server market.
1 LightUmbra 2018-01-05
TBH though Google makes Android and there's no outward sperging like you see in free software. Also, I wouldn't call servers truly mainstream. The autism you see from the Linux people definitely hurts their chances at making a serious dent in the consumer PC market.
1 UpvoteIfYouDare 2018-01-05
Linux is the foundation of Android and Google still contributes to the Linux project IIRC.
To begin with, Linux people have nothing to do with Linux's scarcity in the consumer PC market. Its scarcity is due to a combination of Linux's late start in terms of catering to usability for the casual user and Window's sheer momentum due to its early adoption within enterprise PCs and its offering of enterprise features such as Active Directory.
Second of all, who gives a fuck about the consumer PC market? Servers and smartphones are where the real money is at.
1 LightUmbra 2018-01-05
Your first point is true. I never said that autism was the only, or even a major part of why Linux has a low adoption rate for PCs. I'd also say another big reason is that it can be difficult for many less computer savvy people to use. The average person can't go hunt for drivers because their wifi won't work. This is a result of PC manufacturers not caring about Linux, but devs haven't done enough to make it much better.
Your second point is wrong though. Just because the consumer PC market has been dwarfed by the phone market doesn't mean there still isn't a shit load of money in the market. Have you ever tried to type a paper on your phone? You'd probably kill yourself before you finished.
1 error404brain 2018-01-05
Android is not a linux distro tho. It just has the linux kernel. It would be like saying that windows is linux because you can put GNU on it.
