Why, because it took place at some point during his second term, or because Trump had won a couple of primaries when the McConnell said that 290 days was not enough time to confirm a Supreme Court nominee?
You mean the rule where if a Supreme Court Justice had announced their retirement (not death) during the heat of election season running from right before the RNC and DNC (not six months beforehand), the Senate should wait to (not refuse to) consider the president's nomination until after the November election.
Because during the months of campaigning between the RNC and DNC, a SCOTUS nominee would become a political tool and not judged on their merits.
How does that apply to a nomination well ahead of the national election to fill a vacancy caused by a death, meaning that the vacancy couldn't be delayed? And how does it mean that they should just ignore the nomination, rather than going through the process after the election results were announced?
