OK, let me entertain you guys. You asked if my IQ was tested professionally.
A long ago, my SAT's scores were 640/800 math 640/800 verbal and that put me in the 98th percentile at that time. I know 640/800 on each part does not not very high but scoring high on both math and verbal is less common, hence the high percentile. At the time, I felt my score was simply due to my participation in long-distance and middle distance running during school. I had a very good sense of time and pacing and a greater ability to focus my energy than my classmates. Compared to racing 5 miles, sitting down for a 3 hour test seemed easy to me. So, I was very good at most tests. Those skills I picked up from sports enabled me to finish all the questions on the test and then go back and check my answers.
Later, I took the GMAT and scored in the 93 percentile. Not as high a score but you need to remember that only likely college graduates will take that test. In other words, the competition was probably pretty good.
Later on, my SAT score did get me into Mensa (a high IQ society) but I dropped out after a year. Mensa is full of odd people like me. Wink.
My mother was an industrial psychologist (an HR worker specializing in employee assessment) and that gave me access to several type of intelligence and personality tests. Taking some of the IQ tests at home, I usually got a result between 130 and 140. I was surprised at the close agreement between the various tests and my SATs. The tests seemed to have surface validity.
Now, having a high IQ does not mean I have no weaknesses. I have very poor small motor control (could not master the piano) and average oral language skills. I had some trouble mastering foreign languages like High School French, although after studying, living and working in Japan, I can now speak and read Japanese.
Having a high IQ does predict certain career paths and although I would not call myself extremely successful, I am an instructor at a large university and I have edited and published textbooks.
That being said, IQ is just a way to measure a type of basic problem solving ability and brainpower in the same way we use horsepower to measure cars. A faster car is not always a better car. IQ is only one aspect of a person and should not be used to determine who is good or bad, deserving or undeserving.
In fact the best predictor for success in school is not IQ, it is contentiousness. People who can sit down, follow directions and do things carefully are most likely to do well not just in High School, but also in graduate school.
EQ (Emotional intelligence) is also very important to success and morality is a better predictor of who is able to participate in a stable society. So, having a higher IQ does not mean I can claim to be a better person than others and I don't claim to be better than others.
Finally, group IQ matters but should not be used to discriminate again individuals or nations. However, living in East Asia, I have met plenty of people with low IQs but on the whole, I have seen how people's IQs are higher in Eastern Asia (on AVERAGE) and that the complexity of the languages and cultural emphasis on education help to sustain generally peaceful and productive societies TODAY. Did Chinese, Japanese and Korean societies have some wars, injustice, suppression, etc. in the past, yes of course. Now? Not so much.
I think the issue of differences in language complexity is an important one for people to understand. Higher IQs and that emphasis on education enables the teaching of more complex languages. I am not just talking about how character-based languages can represent ideas with shapes (Japanese Kanji for example) I am talking about grammar forms that express complex social relationships. The grammar forms used in Japanese sentences to express giving and taking include a depth of information (direction, social rank, humbleness) that is just not present in English in the same way. In other words, a short Japanese sentence explaining who gave what gift to whom contains information about the tense and direction of giving (similar to English- I gave flowers to my mother) but also includes information about the different social rank of the giver and taker and may include information which expresses the humility of the speaker. In English, expressing these ideas would take a couple sentences or would sound odd, as if you the sentence was a translation from an Eastern asian language (I offered up a not-so-great-present to my humble mom, as she is of greater rank than me but she is no way better than your honorable mother)
This type of speaking forces people to be aware of social relationships but also forces them to express them in order to meet social expectations.
Now, does this mean English speakers are morons? No way, English is a very precise language that does very many complex things like describe cause and effect very well (it has a great set of verb wonderful verb tenses), which is why it has become the language of science.
In any case, when a person comes from a society which uses a language that cannot express complex ideas like cause and effect or complex social relations, that society will suffer from a lack of scientific understanding and civility. The people in those societies are more likely to make bad decisions and not live in harmony.
Does lack of language complexity have a two-way cause-effect relationship with IQ. I think that is a fair question to ask and we should not be afraid to answer it. Because the solution could be as simple as teaching people a more complex language as a tool for improved thought and better social behavior.

The currently accepted view is that all languages are equally complex, they just distribute the complexity in other areas. A language with a simpler morphology could make it up for it a more intricate syntax, for example. No language, regardless of complexity is considered objectively better or worse since they're all 'designed' to express human thought. Speaking certain languages will not make you smarter than others

The IQ gap between nations is very real thing and less than 50% of tap may be due to genetics. Culture is very important and language is a key to culture.
A computer language with a limited command set and simple syntax is less powerful than a computer language with an extensive command set and complex syntax.
The brain is a computer and language is software. Limit the language and you limit the potential of that brain to reach its full potential.

It it is too bad that the people who give IQ tests never designed IQ tests that don't rely on language or words. You know a test that only involves diagrams or drawings to see what kind of pattern recognition and basic creative problem solving humans are capable of. Also, it is too bad they never thought about paying people to take IQ test, so they would be motivated to come in and complete the task. Gosh, it is too bad researchers never went to the best universities in South Africa and did this type of testing in order to eliminate extraneous cultural influences. Also, it is too bad they did not give all the test takers unlimited time to do the problems just to see them walk out when the minimum time was up. I mean if they did all these things they might discover that even students at the best universities in South Africa still have IQ deficits when compared to their randomly sampled same age counterparts in other countries who take the same non-verbal tests of mental ability. Random sample would meaning an equal mix of college and non-college graduate participants.
Oh wait, they did do all of these things. And the IQ results were still at least 10 points below the average American.
So what can we say if someone was very careful to eliminate all other factors but IQ and conscientiousness.
Yes, that is right, I do have a complaint about the testing. Students who come from a culture where IQ is not valued just don't give a shit about IQ tests or their own IQ. In the same way, that the 3rd world students don't give a shit about getting to my classes on time or handing in homework assignments on time that fulfill all the homework assignments requirements. Of course, when they need that higher grade, they are at me door asking me for more points.
So, the only cultural argument that I will accept is that people from some cultures don't do well on these tests because they are from a culture where the desire to excel academically is just not taught.

Remember I am arguing that IQ is NOT determined primarily by genes. Many experts believe that IQ has less than 50% heritability. Is ringworm or starvation a cause of lower IQ in poor countries, definitely. However, the testing I am talking about was done at the best colleges in South Africa, not places you are going to find the most impoverished people.

In 7th grade, I took an SAT test without preparing for it at all, it was spur-of-the-moment, I knew about it about an hour ahead of time and didn't do any research or anything. I scored higher on it than the average person using it to apply for college in my area.
An IQ test has shown me to be in the 99.9th percentile for IQ. This is the highest result the test I was given reaches; anything further and they'd consider it to be within the margin of error for that test.
My mother's boyfriend of 8 years is an aerospace engineer who graduated Virginia Tech. At the age of 15, I understand physics better than him, and I owe very little of it to him, as he would rarely give me a decent explanation of anything, just tell me that my ideas were wrong and become aggravated with me for not quite understanding thermodynamics. He's not particularly successful as an engineer, but I've met lots of other engineers who aren't as good as me at physics, so I'm guessing that's not just a result of him being bad at it.
I'm also pretty good at engineering. I don't have a degree, and other than physics I don't have a better understanding of any aspect of engineering than any actual engineer, but I have lots of ingenuity for inventing new things. For example, I independently invented regenerative brakes before finding out what they were, and I was only seven or eight years old when I started inventing wireless electricity solutions (my first idea being to use a powerful infrared laser to transmit energy; admittedly not the best plan).
I have independently thought of basically every branch of philosophy I've come across. Every question of existentialism which I've seen discussed in SMBC or xkcd or Reddit or anywhere else, the thoughts haven't been new to me. Philosophy has pretty much gotten trivial for me; I've considered taking a philosophy course just to see how easy it is.
Psychology, I actually understand better than people with degrees. Unlike engineering, there's no aspect of psychology which I don't have a very good understanding of. I can debunk many of even Sigmund Freud's theories.
I'm a good enough writer that I'm writing a book and so far everybody who's read any of it has said it was really good and plausible to expect to have published. And that's not just, like, me and family members, that counts strangers on the Internet. I've heard zero negative appraisal of it so far; people have critiqued it, but not insulted it.
I don't know if that will suffice as evidence that I'm intelligent. I'm done with it, though, because I'd rather defend my maturity, since it's what you've spent the most time attacking. The following are some examples of my morals and ethical code.
I believe firmly that everybody deserves a future. If we were to capture Hitler at the end of WWII, I would be against executing him. In fact, if we had any way of rehabilitating him and knowing that he wasn't just faking it, I'd even support the concept of letting him go free. This is essentially because I think that whoever you are in the present is a separate entity from who you were in the past and who you are in the future, and while your present self should take responsibility for your past self's actions, it shouldn't be punished for them simply for the sake of punishment, especially if the present self regrets the actions of the past self and feels genuine guilt about them.
I don't believe in judgement of people based on their personal choices as long as those personal choices aren't harming others. I don't have any issue with any type of sexuality whatsoever (short of physically acting out necrophilia, pedophilia, or other acts which have a harmful affect on others - but I don't care what a person's fantasies consist of, as long as they recognize the difference between reality and fiction and can separate them). I don't have any issue with anybody over what type of music they listen to, or clothes they wear, etc. I know that's not really an impressive moral, but it's unfortunately rare; a great many people, especially those my age, are judgmental about these things.
I love everyone, even people I hate. I wish my worst enemies good fortune and happiness. Rick Perry is a vile, piece of shit human being, deserving of zero respect, but I wish for him to change for the better and live the best life possible. I wish this for everyone.
I'm pretty much a pacifist. I've taken a broken nose without fighting back or seeking retribution, because the guy stopped punching after that. The only time I'll fight back is if 1) the person attacking me shows no signs of stopping and 2) if I don't attack, I'll come out worse than the other person will if I do. In other words, if fighting someone is going to end up being more harmful to them than just letting them go will be to me, I don't fight back. I've therefore never had a reason to fight back against anyone in anything serious, because my ability to take pain has so far made it so that I'm never in a situation where I'll be worse off after a fight. If I'm not going to get any hospitalizing injuries, I really don't care.
The only exception is if someone is going after my life. Even then, I'll do the minimum amount of harm to them that I possibly can in protecting myself. If someone points a gun at me and I can get out of it without harming them, I'd prefer to do that over killing them.
I consider myself a feminist. I don't believe in enforced or uniform gender roles; they may happen naturally, but they should never be coerced into happening unnaturally. As in, the societal pressure for gender roles should really go, even if it'll turn out that the majority of relationships continue operating the same way of their own accord. I treat women with the same outlook I treat men, and never participate in the old Reddit "women are crazy" circlejerk, because there are multiple women out there and each have different personalities just like there are multiple men out there and each with different personalities. I don't think you do much of anything except scare off the awesome women out there by going on and on about the ones who aren't awesome.
That doesn't mean I look for places to victimize women, I just don't believe it's fair to make generalizations such as the one about women acting like everything's OK when it's really not (and that's a particularly harsh example, because all humans do that).
I'm kind of tired of citing these examples and I'm guessing you're getting tired of reading them, if you've even made it this far. In closing, the people who know me in real life all respect me, as do a great many people in the Reddit brony community, where I spend most of my time and where I'm pretty known for being helpful around the community. A lot of people in my segment of the community are depressed or going through hard times, and I spend a lot of time giving advice and support to people there. Yesterday someone quoted a case of me doing this in a post asking everyone what their favorite motivational/inspirational quote was, and that comment was second to the top, so I guess other people agreed (though, granted, it was a pretty low-traffic post, only about a dozen competing comments).

An IQ test has shown me to be in the 99.9th percentile for IQ. This is the highest result the test I was given reaches; anything further and they'd consider it to be within the margin of error for that test.
I've consistently scored over 130 on IQ tests. I've literally rarely scored below 99th percentile on anything.
My mother's boyfriend of 8 years is an aerospace engineer who graduated Virginia Tech. At the age of 15, I understand physics better than him, and I owe very little of it to him, as he would rarely give me a decent explanation of anything, just tell me that my ideas were wrong and become aggravated with me for not quite understanding thermodynamics. I'm also pretty good at engineering. I don't have a degree, and other than physics I don't have a better understanding of any aspect of engineering than any actual engineer, but I have lots of ingenuity for inventing new things. I have independently thought of basically every branch of philosophy I've come across. Every question of existentialism which I've seen discussed in SMBC or xkcd or Reddit or anywhere else, the thoughts haven't been new to me. I don't believe in judgement of people based on their personal choices as long as those personal choices aren't harming others. I don't have any issue with any type of sexuality whatsoever (short of physically acting out necrophilia, pedophilia, or other acts which have a harmful affect on others - but I don't care what a person's fantasies consist of, as long as they recognize the difference between reality and fiction and can separate them). I dont' just mean better than me at computer science, I mean everything.
I scored a 2200 on my SAT. That isn't super scored, that's straight up, one test. I've been beaten by two people in my class, a 25 on an ACT and a 2280 on an SAT. What you don't realize is that there are people out there better than you. Now, that may be because you weren't exposed to them, but you will be. I happen to have been my whole life, and I'm lucky for it. What you need to learn, and I mean this as advice, not as insulting, is that you aren't as good as you think you are. Yes, there are probably 15 year old kids out there who are better at aerospace physics than an average aerospace engineer. There are also some pretty stupid people with aerospace engineering degrees. You knowing an aerospace engineer that isn't very good and happening to understand conceptual physics doesn't turn you into einstein.
I know a child who nearly made it onto the US world math competition team. This kid is insanely smart. He consistantly corrects our math professor (a doctor of pure math) on things, and finds and proves better ways to do things. He's in the top .001% of child mathemeticians in the US. What will come of that? Probably nothing. His ability will probably not allow him to prove the abc conjecture, or find the pattern to prime numbers. It will probably do nothing.
Be realistic, aiming high is fine, but be prepared to fail. If you don't prepare for failure, you'll find that you do much more often.

You get that your lying is obvious, right? If you're getting published, properly published, you don't have to pay for an editor yourself. The publishing house does that because they expect to see a profit out of the book you've given them. The only time ever that an author needs to pay for their own editor is when they're self-publishing or vanity-publishing, IE no-one is interested in publishing your book and no-one is interested in buying your book.
Self-publishing is the way to go as I get to keep all the profits.
And as long as I maintain good relationsships with the universities who buy my books, I continue sell those book year after. I can maintain a good relationship by communicating directly with the Japanese school bookstores via email and supplying the instructors with a good teachers edition which makes their class preparation easy. Now, do I sell thousands of books a year? No, I only sell hundreds but the profit margin is about 65%.

The older test was simple, it had two parts. A perfect score was Math 800 English 800. Scoring a relatively high score on both was less common, therefore I got into 98th percentile. Deal with it.
A 1280 in the 80s or 90s is probably about a 1340 (V+M) today. But that score was never in the 99 percentile, champ. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

OK, let me entertain you guys. You asked if my IQ was tested professionally.
A long ago, my SAT's scores were 640/800 math 640/800 verbal and that put me in the 98th percentile at that time. I know 640/800 on each part does not not very high but scoring high on both math and verbal is less common, hence the high percentile. At the time, I felt my score was simply due to my participation in long-distance and middle distance running during school. I had a very good sense of time and pacing and a greater ability to focus my energy than my classmates. Compared to racing 5 miles, sitting down for a 3 hour test seemed easy to me. So, I was very good at most tests. Those skills I picked up from sports enabled me to finish all the questions on the test and then go back and check my answers.
Later, I took the GMAT and scored in the 93 percentile. Not as high a score but you need to remember that only likely college graduates will take that test. In other words, the competition was probably pretty good.
Later on, my SAT score did get me into Mensa (a high IQ society) but I dropped out after a year. Mensa is full of odd people like me. Wink.
My mother was an industrial psychologist (an HR worker specializing in employee assessment) and that gave me access to several type of intelligence and personality tests. Taking some of the IQ tests at home, I usually got a result between 130 and 140. I was surprised at the close agreement between the various tests and my SATs. The tests seemed to have surface validity.
Now, having a high IQ does not mean I have no weaknesses. I have very poor small motor control (could not master the piano) and average oral language skills. I had some trouble mastering foreign languages like High School French, although after studying, living and working in Japan, I can now speak and read Japanese.
Having a high IQ does predict certain career paths and although I would not call myself extremely successful, I am an instructor at a large university and I have edited and published textbooks.
That being said, IQ is just a way to measure a type of basic problem solving ability and brainpower in the same way we use horsepower to measure cars. A faster car is not always a better car. IQ is only one aspect of a person and should not be used to determine who is good or bad, deserving or undeserving.
In fact the best predictor for success in school is not IQ, it is contentiousness. People who can sit down, follow directions and do things carefully are most likely to do well not just in High School, but also in graduate school.
EQ (Emotional intelligence) is also very important to success and morality is a better predictor of who is able to participate in a stable society. So, having a higher IQ does not mean I can claim to be a better person than others and I don't claim to be better than others.
Finally, group IQ matters but should not be used to discriminate again individuals or nations. However, living in East Asia, I have met plenty of people with low IQs but on the whole, I have seen how people's IQs are higher in Eastern Asia (on AVERAGE) and that the complexity of the languages and cultural emphasis on education help to sustain generally peaceful and productive societies TODAY. Did Chinese, Japanese and Korean societies have some wars, injustice, suppression, etc. in the past, yes of course. Now? Not so much.
I think the issue of differences in language complexity is an important one for people to understand. Higher IQs and that emphasis on education enables the teaching of more complex languages. I am not just talking about how character-based languages can represent ideas with shapes (Japanese Kanji for example) I am talking about grammar forms that express complex social relationships. The grammar forms used in Japanese sentences to express giving and taking include a depth of information (direction, social rank, humbleness) that is just not present in English in the same way. In other words, a short Japanese sentence explaining who gave what gift to whom contains information about the tense and direction of giving (similar to English- I gave flowers to my mother) but also includes information about the different social rank of the giver and taker and may include information which expresses the humility of the speaker. In English, expressing these ideas would take a couple sentences or would sound odd, as if you the sentence was a translation from an Eastern asian language (I offered up a not-so-great-present to my humble mom, as she is of greater rank than me but she is no way better than your honorable mother)
This type of speaking forces people to be aware of social relationships but also forces them to express them in order to meet social expectations.
Now, does this mean English speakers are morons? No way, English is a very precise language that does very many complex things like describe cause and effect very well (it has a great set of verb wonderful verb tenses), which is why it has become the language of science.
In any case, when a person comes from a society which uses a language that cannot express complex ideas like cause and effect or complex social relations, that society will suffer from a lack of scientific understanding and civility. The people in those societies are more likely to make bad decisions and not live in harmony.
Does lack of language complexity have a two-way cause-effect relationship with IQ. I think that is a fair question to ask and we should not be afraid to answer it. Because the solution could be as simple as teaching people a more complex language as a tool for improved thought and better social behavior.

The currently accepted view is that all languages are equally complex, they just distribute the complexity in other areas. A language with a simpler morphology could make it up for it a more intricate syntax, for example. No language, regardless of complexity is considered objectively better or worse since they're all 'designed' to express human thought. Speaking certain languages will not make you smarter than others

The IQ gap between nations is very real thing and less than 50% of tap may be due to genetics. Culture is very important and language is a key to culture.
A computer language with a limited command set and simple syntax is less powerful than a computer language with an extensive command set and complex syntax.

It it is too bad that the people who give IQ tests never designed IQ tests that don't rely on language or words. You know a test that only involves diagrams or drawings to see what kind of pattern recognition and basic creative problem solving humans are capable of. Also, it is too bad they never thought about paying people to take IQ test, so they would be motivated to come in and complete the task. Gosh, it is too bad researchers never went to the best universities in South Africa and did this type of testing in order to eliminate extraneous cultural influences. Also, it is too bad they did not give all the test takers unlimited time to do the problems just to see them walk out when the minimum time was up. I mean if they did all these things they might discover that even students at the best universities in South Africa still have IQ deficits when compared to their randomly sampled same age counterparts in other countries who take the same non-verbal tests of mental ability. Random sample would meaning an equal mix of college and non-college graduate participants.
Oh wait, they did do all of these things. And the IQ results were still at least 10 points below the average American.
So what can we say if someone was very careful to eliminate all other factors but IQ and conscientiousness.
Yes, that is right, I do have a complaint about the testing. Students who come from a culture where IQ is not valued just don't give a shit about IQ tests or their own IQ. In the same way, that the 3rd world students don't give a shit about getting to my classes on time or handing in homework assignments on time that fulfill all the homework assignments requirements. Of course, when they need that higher grade, they are at me door asking me for more points.
So, the only cultural argument that I will accept is that people from some cultures don't do well on these tests because they are from a culture where the desire to excel academically is just not taught.
Otherwise my argument that speaking dumb languages makes you dumb still stands.
Remember I am arguing that IQ is NOT determined primarily by genes. Many experts believe that IQ has less than 50% heritability. Is ringworm or starvation a cause of lower IQ in poor countries, definitely. However, the testing I am talking about was done at the best colleges in South Africa, not places you are going to find the most impoverished people.

That said.
In 7th grade, I took an SAT test without preparing for it at all, it was spur-of-the-moment, I knew about it about an hour ahead of time and didn't do any research or anything. I scored higher on it than the average person using it to apply for college in my area.
An IQ test has shown me to be in the 99.9th percentile for IQ. This is the highest result the test I was given reaches; anything further and they'd consider it to be within the margin of error for that test.
My mother's boyfriend of 8 years is an aerospace engineer who graduated Virginia Tech. At the age of 15, I understand physics better than him, and I owe very little of it to him, as he would rarely give me a decent explanation of anything, just tell me that my ideas were wrong and become aggravated with me for not quite understanding thermodynamics. He's not particularly successful as an engineer, but I've met lots of other engineers who aren't as good as me at physics, so I'm guessing that's not just a result of him being bad at it.
I'm also pretty good at engineering. I don't have a degree, and other than physics I don't have a better understanding of any aspect of engineering than any actual engineer, but I have lots of ingenuity for inventing new things. For example, I independently invented regenerative brakes before finding out what they were, and I was only seven or eight years old when I started inventing wireless electricity solutions (my first idea being to use a powerful infrared laser to transmit energy; admittedly not the best plan).
I have independently thought of basically every branch of philosophy I've come across. Every question of existentialism which I've seen discussed in SMBC or xkcd or Reddit or anywhere else, the thoughts haven't been new to me. Philosophy has pretty much gotten trivial for me; I've considered taking a philosophy course just to see how easy it is.
Psychology, I actually understand better than people with degrees. Unlike engineering, there's no aspect of psychology which I don't have a very good understanding of. I can debunk many of even Sigmund Freud's theories.
I'm a good enough writer that I'm writing a book and so far everybody who's read any of it has said it was really good and plausible to expect to have published. And that's not just, like, me and family members, that counts strangers on the Internet. I've heard zero negative appraisal of it so far; people have critiqued it, but not insulted it.
I don't know if that will suffice as evidence that I'm intelligent. I'm done with it, though, because I'd rather defend my maturity, since it's what you've spent the most time attacking. The following are some examples of my morals and ethical code.
I believe firmly that everybody deserves a future. If we were to capture Hitler at the end of WWII, I would be against executing him. In fact, if we had any way of rehabilitating him and knowing that he wasn't just faking it, I'd even support the concept of letting him go free. This is essentially because I think that whoever you are in the present is a separate entity from who you were in the past and who you are in the future, and while your present self should take responsibility for your past self's actions, it shouldn't be punished for them simply for the sake of punishment, especially if the present self regrets the actions of the past self and feels genuine guilt about them.
I don't believe in judgement of people based on their personal choices as long as those personal choices aren't harming others. I don't have any issue with any type of sexuality whatsoever (short of physically acting out necrophilia, pedophilia, or other acts which have a harmful affect on others - but I don't care what a person's fantasies consist of, as long as they recognize the difference between reality and fiction and can separate them). I don't have any issue with anybody over what type of music they listen to, or clothes they wear, etc. I know that's not really an impressive moral, but it's unfortunately rare; a great many people, especially those my age, are judgmental about these things.
I love everyone, even people I hate. I wish my worst enemies good fortune and happiness. Rick Perry is a vile, piece of shit human being, deserving of zero respect, but I wish for him to change for the better and live the best life possible. I wish this for everyone.
I'm pretty much a pacifist. I've taken a broken nose without fighting back or seeking retribution, because the guy stopped punching after that. The only time I'll fight back is if 1) the person attacking me shows no signs of stopping and 2) if I don't attack, I'll come out worse than the other person will if I do. In other words, if fighting someone is going to end up being more harmful to them than just letting them go will be to me, I don't fight back. I've therefore never had a reason to fight back against anyone in anything serious, because my ability to take pain has so far made it so that I'm never in a situation where I'll be worse off after a fight. If I'm not going to get any hospitalizing injuries, I really don't care.
The only exception is if someone is going after my life. Even then, I'll do the minimum amount of harm to them that I possibly can in protecting myself. If someone points a gun at me and I can get out of it without harming them, I'd prefer to do that over killing them.
I consider myself a feminist. I don't believe in enforced or uniform gender roles; they may happen naturally, but they should never be coerced into happening unnaturally. As in, the societal pressure for gender roles should really go, even if it'll turn out that the majority of relationships continue operating the same way of their own accord. I treat women with the same outlook I treat men, and never participate in the old Reddit "women are crazy" circlejerk, because there are multiple women out there and each have different personalities just like there are multiple men out there and each with different personalities. I don't think you do much of anything except scare off the awesome women out there by going on and on about the ones who aren't awesome.
That doesn't mean I look for places to victimize women, I just don't believe it's fair to make generalizations such as the one about women acting like everything's OK when it's really not (and that's a particularly harsh example, because all humans do that).
I'm kind of tired of citing these examples and I'm guessing you're getting tired of reading them, if you've even made it this far. In closing, the people who know me in real life all respect me, as do a great many people in the Reddit brony community, where I spend most of my time and where I'm pretty known for being helpful around the community. A lot of people in my segment of the community are depressed or going through hard times, and I spend a lot of time giving advice and support to people there. Yesterday someone quoted a case of me doing this in a post asking everyone what their favorite motivational/inspirational quote was, and that comment was second to the top, so I guess other people agreed (though, granted, it was a pretty low-traffic post, only about a dozen competing comments).
And, uh, I'm a pretty good moderator.

I'm currently applying to colleges, including Yale and Columbia planning to be a Cscience major. Do I have an expectation of getting into one/both? Yes, otherwise I wouldn't apply. Will I be surprised if I don't get in? No, I am aware that there are other people out there better than me at everything. I dont' just mean better than me at computer science, I mean everything.
I scored a 2200 on my SAT. That isn't super scored, that's straight up, one test. I've been beaten by two people in my class, a 25 on an ACT and a 2280 on an SAT. What you don't realize is that there are people out there better than you. Now, that may be because you weren't exposed to them, but you will be. I happen to have been my whole life, and I'm lucky for it. What you need to learn, and I mean this as advice, not as insulting, is that you aren't as good as you think you are. Yes, there are probably 15 year old kids out there who are better at aerospace physics than an average aerospace engineer. There are also some pretty stupid people with aerospace engineering degrees. You knowing an aerospace engineer that isn't very good and happening to understand conceptual physics doesn't turn you into einstein.
I know a child who nearly made it onto the US world math competition team. This kid is insanely smart. He consistantly corrects our math professor (a doctor of pure math) on things, and finds and proves better ways to do things. He's in the top .001% of child mathemeticians in the US. What will come of that? Probably nothing. His ability will probably not allow him to prove the abc conjecture, or find the pattern to prime numbers. It will probably do nothing.
Be realistic, aiming high is fine, but be prepared to fail. If you don't prepare for failure, you'll find that you do much more often.

The publishing house does that because they expect to see a profit out of the book you've given them. The only time ever that an author needs to pay for their own editor is when they're self-publishing or vanity-publishing, IE no-one is interested in publishing your book and no-one is interested in buying your book.

Self-publishing is the way to go as I get to keep all the profits. And as long as I maintain good relationsships with the universities who buy my books, I continue sell those book year after. I can maintain a good relationship by communicating directly with the Japanese school bookstores via email and supplying the instructors with a good teachers edition which makes their class preparation easy. Now, do I sell thousands of books a year? No, I only sell hundreds but the profit margin is about 65%. If you choose not to believe me, I really don’t care.
However, if you want to make extra money, start your own side-business.
