This morning the admins saw fit to change the rules and we've been informed that "username mentions to harass users" are not allowed. Here are some examples of user pings that got people suspended.

We're not really sure where the line is drawn so these rules are subject to change but these are some guidelines that we hope will make the admins happy.

Not allowed:

Mean words. No using user pings to call people fucking retards, cunts, etc.
Overt racism, sexism or whatever unpleasant ism you guys are on for the day. Example: don't username ping a trollx user and say "This is why women like you belong in the kitchen /u/whatever".
Ping spamming. Don't fill a thread with username pings. One or two pings is probably ok, filling an inbox is probably not.
Telling people to kill themselves or any other violent content.

When user pings first came out /r/drama didn't use them to 'harass' users. It was a tool to draw people into the comment section and start the shit flinging all over again, not to take your mommy problems out on random internet strangers. We're going to go back to that. Baiting users into a thread is still allowed. The admins have made it clear that it's not harassment to reply to people who are voluntarily participating in a subreddit. /r/drama has its own set of rules and if people choose to comment here they're choosing to participate in a community with these standards. Comments without user pings are still moderated under the old rules.

Kind of a mixed era tbh. The flood of insulting messages anytime there was a remotely large drama thread actively discouraged lolcows from participating in the subreddit. I'm a lot more amused by arguing in the comment section than I am by the dozenth person calling someone a mean word.

Given that /r/SubredditDrama is pretty much on top of Reddit shit, and user pings were our only advantage, why not just ban Reddit links from this sub and force it to focus on cross site drama. It would clean up most of the political spam and also give us something unique again. Think kiwifarms without the obsessive detail.

Here's someone who /r/drama almost pushed to suicide. She stopped posting to reddit for over a month after her encounter with the sub. This was her last comment before the hiatus (now deleted):

By the way, many of those pings are great examples of what you're not supposed to do while pinging someone. Feel free to look through the thread for comments in violation of the rules from people you don't like so you can report them to the admins and get them suspended for a few days 😊

They don't go looking for context before they act (like the time they banned someone for 'doxx' because he said /u/comedicsans live in North Korea). They won't necessarily know you're pinging a regular. The same thing can be said about the mods. We just look at the comment in the mod queue without any context and if we don't recognize the user the comment is likely going to get removed and you'll be banned.
