I hear two myths about the people in Haiti eating dirt, when the reality is halfway in between, the first is "They ear dirt because they're so hungry because they have to eat dirt", the second one is "Eating dirt cookies is part of their culture and it's special dirt that has minerals". Both are partly true.
First off, craving dirt is a common symptom and it's generally a sign of iron deficiency. I work with developmentally disabled kids, and craving dirt is generally a sign that they have iron deficiency, so the first thing the doctor will do is treat them for iron deficiency based on that symptom. Pregnant women frequently crave dirt.
The "It's special soil with lots of minerals" is partly correct, but dirt and dirt cookies have literally no nutritional values, but it does have iron. The "They don't want to eat dirt, but they're doing so because they're starving and it fills their stomach" is also partly incorrect, they want to eat dirt because they have cravings for dirt as a result of having iron deficiency, not to fill their stomach. The dirt cookies taste good to the children, because they experience iron deficiency as a result of malnutrition, not eating dirt because they are forced to eat it to survive.
So, I hear YouTube comments trying to paint two in factual biased pictures, when it's actually somewhere in between.
