So then what is the problem?
Yes they can adjust it at a moment's notice. So the only thing to do is ask for the seat.
Riding NYC public transit daily to and from work. You see women are more willing to ask for seats. That and to force themselves into spaces where it leaves everyone with no space.
No one complaints really, the only time this thing is an issue. On both sides is the internet.

I know there's feminist groups who pushed for anti manspreading posters/laws. Even though there isn't an equivalent push on men's side, a counter movement has been created.
There are anti-"manspreading" PSAs posted on the NY metro from the official NY metro authority. This isn't just some online hysteria. In my opinion, putting a gender designation on the act of taking up more space than necessary is discriminatory, and putting it under the authority of the public metro is state-sanctioned discrimination. (I'm no "men's rights" activist either, I'm just interested in true equality.)
