People who are anal and reorganize stuff constantly, people who write the docs, or people responsible for the external string resource files all end up looking like they've contributed far more than they actually have. Lines committed is not a perfect metric for project contribution.

Really, it's lines deleted where it's at. I'd hire a guy with a significant negative line balance over all other candidates in a blink of an eye, if anyone asked my opinion.

Why? You want someone that commits working code the first time, not someone constantly rewriting everything. Lines deleted is not a measure of some Hemingway style coder, it's a measure of someone who makes a lot of changes.

I'm talking about lines added minus lines removed. If that's significantly in the negatives then this is the guy who will rewrite your retarded bullshit into nice and sensible code.

At my last job, I ended up taking our ancient obsolete graphics engine and refactoring it into something modern and sleek. There were so many obsolete rendering paths, so many chunks of never-used functionality, and so much straight up copy-pasted boilerplate code that I'm pretty sure I have negative lines of code written over the last ten years, if not lifetime.
