The current kerfluffle is over new automoderator settings. /u/qadm apparently figured out how to open the automoderator panel after many years and has set it to spam every post with a list of the rules. This is most likely due to him seeing the auto-moderator message off wholesomemes or other subs that make it to /r/all and thinking he was onto a great idea. Since /r/nyc is not a giant sub that ever makes it to all and is generally browsed by the same group of people, all it's fair denizens have grown quite annoyed with the new practice.
In proper NYC fashion lots of people have been calling him a dumb piece of shit in the various threads about how awful he is, so /u/qadm has responded by liberally swinging the ban hammer.
All in all multiple threads have spawned sperging out over this guy who while a bit inept and a bit of a selfish cunt since he won't let the sub go, doesn't really deserve the amazing level of hate he gets
AutoMod rules have been in place for as long as it's been integrated into reddit. It was not used before that, because we did not want to give moderation rights to a third-party account.

I live in a van (two, actually) for a couple of years, and sometimes still post in /r/vandwellers, that's probably why. I traveled across the country in it, but I'd say about 70% of the time I was living in a van, it was in NYC.
The bans are actually the funniest thing. I got banned because I called his practice of requiring all prospective moderators to get a drink with him in person "creepy" (which he is hilariously touchy about and deletes all such comments). Predictably no one has taken him up on this offer and thus there are no other mods. It was originally just a 365 day temporary ban, but I guess he was stewing about it because 36 hours later he changed it to permanent.
