Xenophobia I understand perfectly. It's a stupid and primitive reaction, but "they are different from us, I don't know 'em, I don't trust 'em" is a perfectly understandable course for a redneck to take.
What I don't understand is the xenophilia of the left, the immediate and reflexive out-group preference it has. It really is bizarre to see how much in the last 10 years they've embraced these racial identity politics, to say nothing of their complete unwillingness to criticize Islam in the West. To say the limousine liberals of the left are self-hating is a cliche by now, but imagine being as goddamn outwardly stupid as Chuck Schumer.
