House Republicans effectively killed a bill Wednesday that would prohibit child marriages in Tennessee, citing an obscure legal theory that passing the bill could deter a conservative lawyer's case against gay marriage.

More: Child marriage in Tennessee: Lawmakers take action to close legal loophole.

Fowler's legal theory is that the Supreme Court's ruling essentially nullified all Tennessee marriage licences, as it required legal marriage to be opened up beyond just a man and a women.

Somebody's off their anti-psychotic meds.

what’s the difference between a man a child?

Finally, yes, gay marriage will lead to child marriage.

Irony so thick an iceberg wouldn't go trough it.

Its about ethics in underage bussy.

We must finish what Sherman started.

I literally don't understand this. The age of consent and the age to get married (with parental) consent are both 16. So, like are the supporters of this bill suggesting that a 16 year old can legally consent to have sex with a 60 year old, but shouldn't be able to get married (with parental approval) or are they suggesting that both cases should be raised to 18?

i think they’re more concerned about the 12 year olds tbh

So, instead of raising the age to get married to be higher than the age of consent, why not just close this loophole that allows for people to be married before the age of consent?

I overall find the idea of the state sanctioning a religious sacrament as kind of stupid, but I think it'd be even stupider to be able to legally fuck but not legally get married, considering what the possible outcomes of the first action are.

So, instead of raising the age to get married to be higher than the age of consent, why not just close this loophole that allows for people to be married before the age of consent?

because why not, 16 year olds shouldn’t be getting married anybow

Well why not? If legally you can fuck whomever you want at 16, then what's the big deal about being married? The worst case scenario is that maybe you have to split half of your stuff if you divorce.

The alternative is a retarded situation like being old enough to vote, and be drafted into the military but not old enough to buy a beer.

Well why not? If legally you can fuck whomever you want at 16, then what's the big deal about being married?

Well, first off, you can't fuck whomever you want. Below 18, Tennessee has a maximum age differential at 18- unless you're married.

Okay then, at least this makes sense because it's logically consistent - over 18 fuck away, from 16 to 17 you need your parents permission to get married, which is defacto the same as allowing you to fuck away.

Also it's obviously not their problem with the bill, because they didn't bring it up

Well, why argue for raising it when the obvious problem is people under the legal consent age getting married though that legal loophole? It seems like they're arguing to both close off the loophole as well as raise the legal age to 18, which would actually be logically inconsistent because then while you could at 16 fuck a 20 year old, you couldn't marry them.

Marriage has a lot more legal weight to it than fucking. Being married to a 19 year old at 16 can and will follow you for the rest of your life. Fucking a 19 year old at 16 probably won't unless pregnant. Fucking a 19 year old at 12 will.

I don't know where you get that kind of reasoning from. Obviously having a baby at 16 is about a million and a half times worse than just having the legal status of "married". Bitter divorce or something?

Divorce, mainly. Taxes, alimony, and going to court for a divorce if it's not amicable can be supremely expensive and put you in serious debt.

Still take that over a baby at 16, 10000 times out of 10000.

Yes, but both A. It's not going to happen with proper birth control B. You can't stop teenagers from fucking. It's hard enough taking down predators, let alone high school romance.
