I saw a documentary on him years ago. Dude's apartment was littered with this little mini pressurized cans full of some chemical he would get high off. I mean there must have been hundreds of those fucking things. Im amazed he didn't die after being high of that shit 24/7.
It's also pretty harmless. The most significant danger is doing it while standing, passing out, and getting a concussion from the fall. Or for the serious nitrous users, using a tank with a mask, passing out with it on, and suffocating.
The high from one lasts for two minutes tops, so if you're doing it with some friends (or even alone), you'll go through a box within half an hour. Looks like he went through three boxes by himself. Probably one of the safer drugs he did back then. A floor covered with spent cartridges is like a napkin covered with empty pistachio shells.
You can die from having too much - it binds to red blood cells and can cause hypoxia. It’s also neurotoxic, and can cause brain lesions with extended use, as well as serious depletion of B12. Not harmless, but definitely less dangerous than a lot of things you could be doing.
The high can last for hours if you have a proper regulator that mixes it with pure oxygen. When I had 26 root canals and crowns done over eight appointments I’d go in, get comfy and strap on the gas and it would be a six hour floating blanket ride.
