Yes. Plus there's always areas with lots of berbers in North Africa. Or bedouins too (they were traditionally nomadic but some communities are settling down).
Yes. Plus there's always areas with lots of berbers in North Africa.
I always thought they were the majority in NA but it seems everyone in the horn is just Arab mixed in with southern Euro lol. They have an interesting culture and nice tattoos.
It's a mess. North africans claim arab ancestry, but the genetics in that place are very diverse. You have to remember that even during Antiquity this region saw lots of exchanges with Southern Europe, which was a hub that saw exchanges all the way to Asia...
And of course the region has always had exchanges with the rest of Africa.
Most of North Africa was part of the Roman Empire anyway. And while the arabs (originally from the Middle East) colonized it (and spread Islam), a lot of the local rulers were still ethnic berbers.
After that there was a further wave of european genetics. Either through the crusades (some people just settled there), or through colonization centuries later.
Apparently berber are also originally from Europe (8000 or 10000 years ago though).
In recent years though those countries reclaimed their "arab" identity more for political reasons, and national unity (especially following decolonization). So that's why people feel "arabs" can be so white. Nowadays it doesn't coincide well with the genetic definition of the original arab populations (who could still pass for white often anyway).
The Mediterranean is the original ethnic melting pot. It's just that people on all sides are trying to forget about it. IIRC berbers are a european group that moved to North Africa. I think it was a population from the area of modern day Germany.
They mixed but some pockets remained very inbred, and conserved a lot of that phenotype.
I might be wrong about the 10000 years figure. It might have been earlier. In the same way Native Americans originally came from Asia on an ice bridge.
In recent years though those countries reclaimed their "arab" identity more for political reasons, and national unity (especially following decolonization).
That’s incredibly dishonest to the Berber community at large though, Moroccans, Algerians, Egyptians, etc can barely understand Saudis and vice versa. Not to mention most of these countries have waaaay different view points than these actual Arab countries like SA, Yemen, etc. Personally don’t know why they aren’t like Iranians where they have an identity crisis tbh
They have their own flag, language group, even unique genetic markers. The only thing “Arab” about them is that they mixed with they follow their main religion.
Exactly. Most of those countries don't use the "classic" arabic language in daily life (they use dialects derived from it). They can somewhat understand each other. The fact that Egypt produces a lot of TV content in Arabic, like movies and series makes their Egyptian Arabic a kind of lingua franca.
Personally don’t know why they aren’t like Iranians where they have an identity crisis tbh
Maybe because iranians held on to the "persian" thing, and managed to always keep a national unity around that (despite the huge revolutions they've had over the last century).
Colonized countries were forced to learn european history in school. They were forbidden from teaching Arabic. So the local language lost any unity, any academic basis... So when decolonization came, they used the Middle Eastern Arabic as a basis for their official languages (and they imported a lot of ideology from there, because they also imported intellectuals and teachers from that area to restart teaching the language).
So of course politicians used that to create a new national identity out of thin air, or else countries like Algeria and Lybia would have erupted into tribal warfare real fast. Lybia is going that way now that it's not a dictatorship anymore. Mauritania is also having a lot of issues (don't know to call it organized terrorism or full on civil war at that point).
Pre-colonization those countries didn't even have unity. The borders were drawn almost at random by colonial powers. People like bedouins and berbers, who had their own identity and didn't care about borders, got dicked every which way by both colonization and decolonization.
It wasn't always rape to be fair. At that time, there was a lot of land that wasn't fully exploited due to lack of population (or people dying from harsh conditions). So a lot of destitute nobles for instance would try their luck and end up building a farm and then a castle in those lands. Then try to bring in people from their home land to work these lands.
Although there was probably a lot of raping during the crusades.
Especially during that one where the crusaders ended up the one being raped. Some idiots thought they could peacefully convert muslims, so they sought passage to the Holy Lands through Italy. Where italian merchants (not sure if they weren't (((merchants))) to be honest) pretended to oblige, offered them a boat trip, and ended up selling them into slavery. Proving once more that italians are scum.
The Children's Crusade was a disastrous popular crusade by European christians to regain the Holy Land from the Muslims, said to have taken place in 1212. The crusaders left areas of Northern France, was led by Stephen of Cloyes, and Germany, led by Nicholas. The traditional narrative is likely conflated from some factual and mythical events which include the visions by a French boy and a German boy, an intention to peacefully convert Muslims in the Holy Land to Christianity, bands of children marching to Italy, and children being sold into slavery many children were tricked by merchants and sailed over to what they thought were the holy lands but actually turned out to be slave markets.
Arabs and Jews are both semetic people and both different flavours of mayo. They just don't go well together, like chipotle mayo and garlic & herb mayo.
Pashtuns are pretty light skinned but claiming whiteness as a race is doubtful. The British erroneously assumed that they were descendants of Greek soldiers and a lot of Pashtuns still believe that even though modern DNA testing has shown them to be genetically much closer to neighbouring populations and pretty much 0% Greek.
That was just the British “Anglo”-ing the Greeks to justify the general bigotry towards Southern Europeans I believe since they were generally of a darker skin tone and always harped on shit like “hurr they got raped by Turks” even though their genetics remained unchanged for thousands of years and shit like blonde hair was actually non-Native to the region.
Pashtuns are just the descendants of the original Iranian/Persian conquerors and with India and Pakistan’s weird caste system they’re seen as top dog because of their light features so Paki’s who already have problems admitting they’re Indian converts, cling onto shit like “we wuz Arabs”, “we wuz Pashtuns”, “we wuz Turks”, etc.

Daily reminder that Monk wasn't just a typical mayo turboautist, he was also an Arab.

How brown or white are you perceived to be is a function of the agendaposter.

The King of Jordan has blue eyes too. Them Arabs just can't get enough of white wimmenz.
The same shit happened to the moors in Spain.
1 DistortedLines 2018-03-15
You can get blue eyes and not be mixed tho
1 siskonaut 2018-03-15
Technically yes. But King Hussein's mom was an Englishwoman by the name of Antoinette Avril Gardiner.
1 DistortedLines 2018-03-15
I know lol I'm Arab, but the further north and west you go the more common blue/green eyes get.
1 siskonaut 2018-03-15
True. It's not super common but green/hazel eyes are definitely found in the local populations.
1 DistortedLines 2018-03-15
Yeah I'm pretty sure they're left over from ancient European migrations into the area.

Damn he has aged after committing countless atrocities on his country

Not all "arabs" have the same exact ethnic origins though (lots of mixing with local populations).
So people in Syria, Lebanon... can look pretty much right, but go to Morocco and you'll see.
1 PracticalOnions 2018-03-15
Moroccans vary a lot though. The ones from Fez look like Spaniards lol

Berbers look pretty European, it's Moors that are real swarthy right?
1 IAintThatGuy 2018-03-15
"Moors" used to meant anyone from North Africa anyway. Berbers are pretty much white. Even pale in some areas (lots of blondes and redheads).
1 Thulean-Dragon 2018-03-15
Yeah, I nearly shit myself when the Nordic god who I worked with told me he was Algerian.
