What do you think about the whole, "women belong in the kitchen" trope? I think if you look a bit deeper, you'd find it pretty interesting. Most commercial kitchen are run and staffed by exclusively men. These jokes are always, "go make me a sammich" and never "go make me a duck confit on a cornbread waffle with scallions and a sour cherry reduction". While these jokes do declare that women belong in the kitchen, they never actually attribute any level of skill to their kitchen ability. It's interesting that these men demand a caretaker to provide the absolute basics of food for them. There is a dicotomy, as always, between perception and reality. You would think that the height of masculinity would be to provide for yourself fully, and in exquisite fashion, how ever by their own admittance, these men cannot even make a sandwich, and need a caretaker for one of the most basic and essential human needs.
