Is it typical for Martin Freeman to diss his fan base so hard? I watched Sherlock, but after season 4 I stopped giving a crap because that season was awful. I guess I figured that some people would quit shipping Johnlock after Freeman so brutally crushed it and indicated that there may not even be a 5th season. I hope they let the show die if the actors really don't like the show since it'll just be a disappointment if they drag it out without putting their hearts into it.

Eh, it's typical of Martin Freeman to be very abrasive and blunt with his comments, which is part of the reason a lot of the fandom has turned against him. But he's generally been nice to the fans in the past and even added fuel to the Johnlock fire before.

I'd wager the backlash and poor reception to Series 4 (though Series 3 is when the tide really started turning against Sherlock) crossed with the general fervour and craziness of the Sherlock fandom is what lead to his comments here.

Series 3 definitely the start of the downward slide, but there was still room for series 4 to correct course. Idk I mostly agree with Hbomberguy's assessment of Sherlock getting progressively shittier due to poor choices by the showrunners.

Thanks for clarifying about Martin Freeman. I'm generally a fan of his work, but I don't follow celebs very closely so I was a bit surprised by how abrasive his comments were.

I mostly blame Mark Gatiss for the dive in quality.

Moffat has his problems, but the scripts where he's the sole writer are okay (and he's written some actually great Doctor Who episodes in the past few years, so he's capable). Gatiss seems to be responsible for the cringiest writing/turning the characters into self parody. His Doctor Who episodes, incidentally, tend to be the worst in the season.

But yeah, after Series 3 they needed to course correct and take note of criticism but they doubled down instead. Though iirc, while s3 got a lot of flack online, it got good reviews in the British media, so maybe they were somehow unaware?

Therefore the majority of most fan bases will be white, however white people tend to lean much more conservative than other racial groups (baring muslims) so if anything, whites will be under represented in the subset of tumblr shipmates.
