he was just being a responsible journalist. we can't confirm whether it belonged to the nostalgia critic or "Rob" (is that the editor? been a good minute)
if there's anything Oni is known for, it's responsibility
Short-ish version: Internet reviewers became a thing, a bunch of them banded togther and formed a network, the creator got sick of his own creation, the people running the network were total fuckwit assholes, all of the actual talent either fled or was driven off (Obscurus Lupa being one of the few of them actually worth watching).
Back around 2007, a guy named James Rolfe uploaded some satirical reviews of old video games to Youtube under the moniker the Angry Nintendo Nerd, which quickly became popular due to his angry sarcastic persona.
Seeing this, a guy named Doug Walker capitalized on the trend by reviewing old movies in a similar manner under the name the Nostalgia Critic, which likewise became popular.
Doug then set up his own website and began recruiting various people to create their own reviews for movies and video games on it under his banner. Obscurus Lupa and the others mentioned here are people who signed up.
As she says, they weren't paid and instead were just given the publicity of being on a popular website in exchange for creating content.
Doug then had the idea that he should make his own movies, and recruited the people on his website to act in them. The movies are garbage worse than The Room and Birdemic. A lot of them hated working on these movies but were contractually obligated to.
Doug and his brother then became tyrannical with how their content creators acted. Lupa wasn't making enough money and presumably didn't want to get a real job, so she instead wanted to put an ad into the middle of her reviews (midrolls) to make more money, which Doug and co opposed.
Eventually, Lupa and a bunch of others quit over their working conditions which they discuss in the thread.
Hey man, his website his rules. Gotta be 190% autistic, you can't half ass it.
Also, I think Spoony was on there and said he wanted to rape someone so they kicked him and now he eats fast food in depression with his loser hipster girlfriend lol
True, Spoony said something along those lines. But they didn't kick him out, they "suspended him" for like a week. He then noticed that the numbers on his own website almost didn't change at all, he figured out he didn't need Channel Awesome, so he told them to go blow.
His old reviews were ok, he was just a bit obnoxious. Definitely not half the talent of James Rolfe. Then he tried to spin it off into this media empire? Which was just anything.
I spent time as a teen I could have spent drinking watching this fucking manchild, and every time I remember this I want to paint the walls of my home with the contents of my head.
"every time [x happens] I want to use grandads .45 to paint the walls of my room with the contents of my head so that we can see what the fuck I was thinking"
Maybe not perfect, but the hyperbole definitely adds something.
Shit I used to watch his reviews when I was younger... Tried to watch a recent one, he's a total shill. I understand the need for ads to make revenue, but holy shit he really won't shut up about whatever product.
Also full of himself--I stopped watching I remember because of these retarded-ass skits being shoved in and going over his OWN top 11 moments or whatever.
Yeah, I stopped watching him and the Angry Nintendo Nerd after they became obsessed with putting sub Nickelodeon sitcom level chase scenes in all their reviews.
I was led to believe that he originally started going further down the "skit" route because his vids kept getting DMCA'ed and he couldn't show so much of the movie anymore. Not sure that's true tho...

I strive for journalistic integrity. Every day I wake up and say, "What would /u/snallygaster do?"

tfw the local fujoshi dramaposter can be relied upon to produce better and more interesting content than the entire American media apparatus

OK I read the background and the other links, still wondering who are these people and what is a midroll?

her baywatching is gold and I still say that her charmed reviews are essential viewing.

One of the shit movies in question being sporked by Lupa and friends.

So this is about ethics in movie journalism.

There's a decent amount of time in between that, he did quite well by himself for some time.
And then he completely lost it.

1 OniTan 2018-03-17
The worst part is, his first video before he copied Rolfe was just him screaming as a Transformers trailer played.
1 Burnnoticelover 2018-03-17
Lel Doug has midrolls in practically every video.

They weren't contractually obligated. They just felt like they had to do it.

Some of the replies start talking about someone committing suicide? /r/drama bullying has nothing on these guys.
1 toynbeeidea16 2018-03-17
Jewario, yeah. Shot himself in the bathroom while his wife tried to talk him down.
1 grungebot5000 2018-03-17
wait, JeWario killed himself?
guess I shouldn't be surprised, but dang
1 Neon_needles 2018-03-17
Someone made fun of his gay hat and said "nigga look like moviebob"
Twas the final straw
1 VidiotGamer 2018-03-17
Honestly, that would be enough for me to keep myself safe.
1 reedemerofsouls 2018-03-17
Oh boy. Now it's revealed that guy may have been a rapist.

Doug Walker is autistic and a control freak
Shocking af.

1 82needshelpimevil 2018-03-17
I took me a bit to realise you meant suicide. I thought you literally wanted to paint the walls so you could see what you were thinking back then.
1 whoopsforgotemail 2018-03-17
That would have been way funnier than a shitty suicide joke tbh
1 VidiotGamer 2018-03-17
You could make it work both ways -
"every time [x happens] I want to use grandads .45 to paint the walls of my room with the contents of my head so that we can see what the fuck I was thinking"
Maybe not perfect, but the hyperbole definitely adds something.
1 whoopsforgotemail 2018-03-17
Yeah, that's definitely a lot better.

A lot of the recent AVGN episodes have gone back to a simpler format. He's producing them way faster now that he's not putting in all of the garbage.
1 mohkohnsepicgun 2018-03-17

What is it with internet critics thinking they can’t just sit in front of camera and talk anymore?
1 GenitalGesticulation 2018-03-17
Who's even given Doug any money? I feel like he's probably better suited to working at a dollar tree
1 Chicup 2018-03-17
Just a brief glance makes this look like a typical women ruin everything situation.
