Do some digging and you will no doubt find Russian money and connections to the movement - they fund separatist movements throughout the West. Divide and conquer, a strategy as old as time. They even fund Texas and California separatist movements, as crazy as it sounds. They don't have to achieve secession, just getting people to join in and adding to the chaos and division is a win for Putin.
