The shock value on this one just isn't there, it just goes too far over the top too quickly to be jarring. If it were like 4-5 lines longer it may have worked better.

Exactly, pacing is key when it comes to shock value. You can't just blow your load instantly, you need to get people invested so by the time the shock hits they are both A. Disappointed and B. Horrified.
