Because they spend 90% of their time arguing about definitions and rankings. Anyone who steps out of line is instantly dealt with and they can't even agree on a basic premise.

Maybe I just don't understand anarchism, but I legitimately do not understand how the thought of a "society with no rules or laws" is an idea the alt left is so fond of.
A society with no rules or laws is literally the purge, with murder and rape and arson and the strong dominating the weak. It's like the exact opposite of what the alt-left wants, so why the fuck is /r/anarchism full of the alt-left?

You don't understand because you aren't mentally ill. I'll explain it for you:
Anarchists literally believe that all crime, violence, and social ills are caused by hierarchy. They don't believe that naturally humans seek to dominate each other in some sort of Hegelian struggle, they believe that naturally all humans are selfless paragons of virtue. As a result they honestly believe that if hierarchy was abolished people would naturally get along and there would be no violence or social ills.
A fun thing is asking Anarchists what they would do in an anarchist society. Literally 0% would do any sort of manual labour and they all believe they'd be some revered revolutionary.

The rest consists mostly of non-white ethnonationalists who are strangely given freedom to operate by anarchists and communists (Black panthers, third worldists, "decolonizers") but these people don't really care about the far left cause; they are just using it to further their racial interests. I have no idea why you'd even tolerate such things, but they're there and extremely prominent. Perhaps it's because some races have been historically oppressed, but that would still make supporting them extremely foolish. Just look at the historically oppressed Jews and the modern state of Israel. Who is to say that Kurdistan (which anarchists in particular keep praising) won't become something similar? Even extremely reactionary religions like Islam are given a pass because they are currently "oppressed" by the West, which automatically evokes some form of sympathy, deserved or not.
The main problem is that the modern left seems to be a purely negative movement, that has tons of things to criticize, but cannot really offer anything in return. Anything organic is immediately stifled because of linguistic policing, people are constantly anxious because they might have stances that are too reactionary and get expelled, and anything that is even remotely spontaneous or organic is immediately destroyed. Everyone is constantly reminded of whatever privilege he has (often in a very snarky and genuinely mean-spirited way), and it feels like all of it is just one big catholic auto-flagellation session. The modern left only emphasizes the bad parts of its followers, but offers very little in return.
The greatest irony is that this used to be the problem of the far right; fascism used to be entirely defined by what it was not, but is now a far more positive movement, eagerly exploiting the lack of identity in modern people (an identity that the left will deny them, especially if they are white) and offering them something to be part of.
