I used to have the same opinion as OP. Then I experienced the horrors of academia and am jealous of the people who 'love science' because they still have an idealized, wonder-filled perception of what goes on in the world of research.

I don't agree, am also in academia and I enjoy NDT. Maybe its cause am dumb about things outside my field and get blown away cool science facts.
