I thought they did a good job on not dumbing down the character. The guy sees two publications with future dates, notes the likelihood of this being a coincidence as incredibly small, and correctly surmises that he's in the future.
Contrast that to Marty McFly, who despite having just seen a demonstration of the DeLorean's capabilities, isn't able to figure it out after a dozen or so clues.
Yeah, for Marty, it was more of a "Holy shit, this can't actually be happening" type deal. He knew what happened, but he held out hope until there was simply no other explanation
I saw an interview with Mike Judge and he said he wishes he had just made the farting ass movie because the extras in the movie theater scene were laughing so hard at it.
