Why do they even bring up small dogs? I have a Pomeranian, dude probably couldn't break skin even if he wanted to. Meanwhile when I was a kid the neighbor girl got a giant chunk of her ass ripped out when some dudes pitbull got free. These differences are not insignificant.
Chihuahuas have this hilarious way of rushing their targets while barking crazily and baring teeth. I think its meant to scare off their opponent using every ounce of their 5 pounds or whatever. Obv almost any other breed could take out a chihuahua in a second, so the chi has to act larger than life to compete. Likewise, the chihuahua's tiny size makes it naturally skittish around small children. This behavior seems fairly established in the breed but can be easily fixed with training and supervision.
