Perhaps the most important thing to examine is why this started happening in Japan in 1974. Maybe there's absolutely nothing in common between the two, but I seriously doubt it. And that obviously eliminates a zillion factors that people tend to look at, including pretty much every one associated with the white genocide concept, aside perhaps from modernity.
E.g. the conceit that the government will take care of you, instead of depending on your family, extending to things like inflation. Another related one is the rising cost of having children by most any set of given standards, but I'm not sure how much of a factor that was in Japan, especially for those in the high-gain/low-risk (salaryman) and government employee sectors of the country, or how all this would play out in the low-gain/high-risk sector of the economy, a part of the population the government cares so little about they lost a large fraction of the equivalent of Social Security records (or, "What does it take for "normal" Japanese subjects to get so upset they knife government beurocrats at their door steps" (!) And yes, this really happened...).
Could be something as simple as educating women, that seems to be the cause of Iran's stunning drop in fertility. But that doesn't match US and Japanese timelines of education and fertility.
Don't know if this counts as "tremendous", but maybe it'll get some people wondering.
