I'm not even sure what your point is. Yeah I'd rather sleep with a dakimakura of my waifu Renge-chan than with some random 3D slut but that doesn't mean I'm desperate, it's the opposite, it implies that I have standards.
Something major is afoot when not one but two comedians whose material deals with (mostly female) insecurity adeptly confront two of comedy’s biggest, most popular dudes.
On what fucking planet is Maron considered a huge comic and ever considered in the league of Letterman? Christ, Tina Fey alone should have Maron getting approval from her. He is a fucking nobody.
30 rock is one of the better comedies but it wasn't really due to her as much as a team effort. The down side is her movies other than mean girls which still isn't comedically amazing, great but not golden, most of them are awful. Like she gets by a lot on her name to talk unfunny shut about having babies and shit.
The flip side is maroon isn't funny. And neither are most women. Women are so butthurt by it they'll hold up people who aren't even comedians, Tina fey is not a comedian she's a comedy writer, if she were just a comedian she'd be fucking entirely unknown. Women just aren't that funny and there's really no way to go around that. Even their best are largely garbage. Tbf I don't find most males funny either. Prefer comedy shows which have more room for set ups.
Kimmy Schmidt has good lines here and there and a few good performances but my god has the plotting turned into a bunch of frantic mugging in the past few years. It's like a Disney Channel show for adults.
It really caught lightning in a bottle with the first season and kinda petered out but I still thought it was funny even though the plot lines were less than stellar.
i dunno, i'm probably in the minority here but i didn't find the show funny at all. Didn't even crack a smile the entire first episode so i didn't bother continuing - which is a shame cuz i love 30 rock and was hoping for more goodness.
Tracy Morgan, the Dennis character, even the others have their moments. Jack was amazing but so many good plot lines. Milf Island, greenzo, Seinfeld vision, Dennis, Tracey and even jennas plots were funny-the Janice joplin biopic.
maybe they're projecting Louis CK's success onto Maron? Like, they need a male king of comedy figure and CK has stepped out, so they pull the guy that has a similar tv show and career duration and talked to Obama once
Ok and how about having amazing comedy specials? Having a bunch of people listen to political comedian podcasts isn't impressing me when it comes to listing top tier comics.
People still talk up comedy material from decades ago on specials. No one cares about a podcast that probably gets outperformed by random political dudes like Ben Shapiro.
No one cares about a podcast that probably gets outperformed by random political dudes like Ben Shapiro.
No, he's consistently in the running for the most popular podcast in the world. It changes from time to time, but he is often #1. Much different scale than Ben Shapiro.
I keep looking up numbers and I consistently see NPR stuff and Ben Shapiro at his level or above him and guys like Joe Rogan blowing him out of the water on top of a huge career across multiple venues.
...he's a comedian? I mean he's been touring for about 20 years, he has lots of specials. If Joe Rogan isn't a comedian then only a handful of people are comedians.
I don't really consider Maron to be a comedian, TBH. He's a decent interview host who can get some interesting people on the program and he lets them chat in a relaxed setting (at least when he's not fanboying or talking all over everyone in one of his manic episodes). He should really just give up the whole "comedy" angle and focus on being a showcase for other people's talent and stories.
What do you mean? For Letterman's show they would likely figure out roughly what topics they would be covering beforehand, not much more than that. Maron's show does not have anywhere near the production value to justify anything resembling a script. I'm not sure what you're basing this off of.
Two extremely well spoken individuals are so unconfident in their ability to carry a conversation that they take the time to painstakingly write out an hour-long script and rehearse it enough so it sounds natural.
Or
Two extremely well spoken individuals had a conversation, which they can do quite easily due to the fact that they are extremely well spoken.
Please reconsider. My strand of environmentalism would use the pulverized bones of people like this to replenish the ground of several states that have been depopulated and turned into giant nature preserves.
What Fey is responding to, perhaps more acutely than the audience, is the second function powering Letterman’s remark: Letterman isn’t just presenting his approval of her sketch in the spirit of comedic bonhomie. As one of comedy’s high priests, he’s doing so from a position of superiority. He clearly expects Fey to be moved by his support, but he also seems to believe his opinion carries real authority, and he expects her to consider his approval definitive. She does not.
Sounds like Tina's a jerk to me. David Letterman started hosting Late Night when she was literally 12 years old. He started doing stand-up when she was five. Why can't it be assumed that he is someone that she would look up to for approval? Why can't it just be "He's an older, wiser comedian that she admired in her youth" instead of "He's a man, she's a woman?"
The vast majority of these 'think pieces' are just the author furiously masturbating while narrating what they imagine people are thinking in order to support their derangement.
Even if these losers do get paid in pocket lint and expired StarBucks coupons, the alternative is probably them writing homoerotic Gilmore Girls fanfiction, which frankly, no one wants to see.
30 rock was a good comedy on network television. Of course it got terrible ratings. If it isn't a cop drama or one of chuck lorre's polished turds, the boomers who still watch network TV are not going to fuck with it.
Did you watch the clip? None of what they described in the article actually happened. He said "I liked that thing you did" and she said "Thanks" and then talked about it a bit.
I looked up the skit, and the response to it. People are fucking retards. It's like the thing she is doing, is the exact opposite of what the retards think she is doing, because they do not understand comedy. They literally think she is saying that we should all just eat cake instead of worrying about the shit going on in society.
Talented female comedians really are being pushed out of comedy, but it's not by the patriarchy. Instead, they're being pushed out by their own industry media. Rather than focusing on female comedians who are actually good, like Kathleen Madigan, they focus on trash tier social media clowns like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman, who stay relevant by constantly bitching about how they're not paid as much as Dave Chappelle, but who can't actually pull an audience and never achieve real success.
Yeah, I've never found her funny, but she is definitely a hard worker.
I am vaguely remembering a part in Maria Bamford's show where she and Tig Notaro are talking to Maria and I thought that scene was funny, but I don't remember what's happening in it.
Silverman is predictable and unoriginal. I could walk onto a college campus and hear the same shit for free. Tired, same old shit. No depth, no originality, no surprise.
I hope this is some 4th level irony because that is the most retarded shit I've heard today. She's the definition of boring, I'd say she's one of the worst "known" comedians right now.
I liked her in Wreck-It Ralph, but that's just because the talented writers gave her something funny to say. When she had to write her own shit, like her short lived show on comedy central, it was a disaster. All I remember from it is her singing about how pancake batter smells like cum. But that's how it always goes with these fake female comedians propped up by the beta media. They tell jokes almost exclusively about sex and dating, and it wears thin very quickly, and they have no other cards up their sleeves.
Sarah Silverman is like 90% poop jokes. Not even shit jokes. She calls the shit poop. She is not funny. The best part of her show was when the voice of the real wisdom cube decided he was a huge fan of TAB soda pop.
they focus on trash tier social media clowns like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman, who stay relevant by constantly bitching about how they're not paid as much as Dave Chappelle, but who can't actually pull an audience and never achieve real success.
Oh come on, Amy Schumer just used that as a negotiating strategy to get more money from Netflix, and it worked, she got her pay increased (not to Chappelle's level of course but it did go up). I would use everything at my disposal to try and get paid more in negotiations as well, I don't blame her. You make it sound like she was going all through the interview circuit complaining about how she didn't get paid as much as Chappelle because she's a woman, which is not the case.
As one of comedy’s high priests, he’s doing so from a position of superiority. He clearly expects Fey to be moved by his support, but he also seems to believe his opinion carries real authority, and he expects her to consider his approval definitive.
Maybe this is less about gender and more about the fact that he's like 90? And especially for Letterman being former king of late night, I wouldn't expect him to think his words are meaningless. Honestly, anyone in his position, regardless of gender, would act in a similar manner, because seniority.
This effort is in one sense typical of Letterman, whose rebrand consists largely of excessive avuncular praise. But it’s doing a couple of other things, too. First, it’s participating in a long-standing comic-on-comic tradition of aggressively bonding the two comics together against the unwashed masses who get offended at jokes. As the comic-on-comic interview has ossified into a genre, this is one of its most predictable beats: the wry moment when the comics sympathize and agree that crowds have gotten hypersensitive and just don’t get what “we” do.
Mr. Thesaurus author guy is bit of a try-hard, eh?
This is what bothers me, if you are a good women comedian you not only have to deal with the sexism, you have to deal with other women comedians that are way worse than you are getting more attention and exposure than deserved from feminist outlets trying to push an agenda.
I think it would be a lot easier if any women in comedy would understand one thing: When David Letterman says the sheet cake joke is good, he is not saying it from a place of authority, or implying that his opinion constitutes approval.
Does anyone really think that when someone says "I thought that was funny" they really mean "I am an authority figure and i have the power to condone this and approve it as funny." ? It's kind of absurd to take it that way.
Yeah, Tina is so strong for feeling bad for telling a fucking joke that a bunch of retards didn't get. I didn't know about this bullshit "controversy", but it's hilarious how the article is somehow sticking up for tina fey getting bullied by humorless morons.

Well that just explained the mystery of Pauly Shores career.
1 CG28 2018-05-22
Were you alive in the 90s? Pauly Shore was the poster boy for early MTV.
1 Awayfone 2018-05-22
Do you know anybody who likes pauly shore?
1 kryonik 2018-05-22
I don't hate him. He's a harmless relic of a bygone era.
1 FrostBittenSalsa 2018-05-22
I loved him in Encino Man with Brendan Frasier and In the Army Now is still a classic tbh

Not really a “Maron thinks” thing, she objectively was. She owned the comedy store and decided who got spots, making tonnes of careers.
1 Stallmansalwaysright 2018-05-22
His character on Glow was somehow more likable than he is in real life.
1 GenitalGesticulation 2018-05-22
Literally who
1 darth_tiffany 2018-05-22
A comedian whose main accomplishment is that he got into podcasting early enough to be considered a "trailblazer."
Though he is arguably very good in his supporting role on the Netflix series GLOW.
1 Stallmansalwaysright 2018-05-22
He's known as a "comedian's comedian" for some reason. Personally I like his show, but calling him that diminishes what people like Doug Stanhope do.
1 wwyzzerdd 2018-05-22
How does anyone diminish being an alcoholic?
1 Stallmansalwaysright 2018-05-22

Precisely
1 darth_tiffany 2018-05-22
Emma Stone has never wowed me in a single role. She's likable at best. Lindsay Lohan was hotter, funnier and a better singer.
Emma Stone's sole advantage is that her parents loved her.
1 Ed_ButteredToast 2018-05-22
I'm not saying Lindsay Lohan < Emma Stone. I love both but it's just that I find Easy A more enjoyable than Mean Girls. Still, I love both movies.

Because a comedy writer is a kind of comedian.

A comedian does standup. Tina fey is a writer who writes comedy. She does standup too but she shouldn't.

Yeah that dude was pretty funny.
1 friend1y 2018-05-22
Don't you know?
There's never any female gatekeepers like [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitzi_Shore](Mitzi Shore) it's just men all the way down to infinity.
1 callievic 2018-05-22
I did not realize Pauly Shore was her son! That explains a lot about his career, frankly.
1 Sober_Sloth 2018-05-22
Wait until this person finds out these interviews are planned out and scripted ahead of time. It’s gonna blow their mind.
1 ScaledDown 2018-05-22
What do you mean? For Letterman's show they would likely figure out roughly what topics they would be covering beforehand, not much more than that. Maron's show does not have anywhere near the production value to justify anything resembling a script. I'm not sure what you're basing this off of.
1 Sober_Sloth 2018-05-22
Yes tv is very unscripted they just hope it goes well
1 ScaledDown 2018-05-22
Yes, two extremely successful and well spoken comedians would be incapable of carrying a conversation on their own.
The other is a fucking podcast.
1 Sober_Sloth 2018-05-22
I have no idea who maron is tbh. But yes those two people became successful and well known by winging their careers.
1 ScaledDown 2018-05-22
What's more likely:
Two extremely well spoken individuals are so unconfident in their ability to carry a conversation that they take the time to painstakingly write out an hour-long script and rehearse it enough so it sounds natural.
Or
Two extremely well spoken individuals had a conversation, which they can do quite easily due to the fact that they are extremely well spoken.
1 Sober_Sloth 2018-05-22
Right tv isn’t scripted 👍
1 ScaledDown 2018-05-22
This is a great example of when /r/drama users try so hard to be counter-culture and above it all that they just come off looking retarded.
1 Sober_Sloth 2018-05-22

1 heavenlytoaster 2018-05-22

I mean Tina Fey is super funny and everyone thought she was super funny way before all this culture war stuff came into full bloom.
1 Pickled_Kagura 2018-05-22
let's be real, though. Jimmy Fallon dissing Amy Poehler is like Forrest Gump calling Gomer Pyle stupid.
1 TherapyFortheRapy 2018-05-22
She can't do standup, so she's not a real comedian.
1 tfdidido 2018-05-22
eh
1 liamemsa 2018-05-22
Sounds like Tina's a jerk to me. David Letterman started hosting Late Night when she was literally 12 years old. He started doing stand-up when she was five. Why can't it be assumed that he is someone that she would look up to for approval? Why can't it just be "He's an older, wiser comedian that she admired in her youth" instead of "He's a man, she's a woman?"
Jesus Christ.
1 VidiotGamer 2018-05-22
The vast majority of these 'think pieces' are just the author furiously masturbating while narrating what they imagine people are thinking in order to support their derangement.
Even if these losers do get paid in pocket lint and expired StarBucks coupons, the alternative is probably them writing homoerotic Gilmore Girls fanfiction, which frankly, no one wants to see.
1 TherapyFortheRapy 2018-05-22
Tina Fey has a lot less legitimate success than redditors admit. Two shows that had terrible ratings, and one that's achieved low ratings on netflix.
Mean Girls was 15 years ago.
1 tron_funkin_blow 2018-05-22
30 rock was a good comedy on network television. Of course it got terrible ratings. If it isn't a cop drama or one of chuck lorre's polished turds, the boomers who still watch network TV are not going to fuck with it.
1 Plexipus 2018-05-22
30 Rock is good. Sorry that your opinions are bad
1 majinblue 2018-05-22
Imagine thinking that 30 Rock isn’t on the same level as The Office in terms of being a cult classic lmfaoooo
1 Power_Incarnate 2018-05-22
I like it better than The Office cause it didn't have a large drop-off in quality towards the end.
1 kippot 2018-05-22
30 rock is streets ahead
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
Two and a Half Men and the Big Bang Theory had excellent ratings through their entire runs
Oh, so did Home Improvement.
Americans have fucking trash-tier taste in comedy.
1 jaja10 2018-05-22
Don't you insult tim allen
1 Power_Incarnate 2018-05-22
Home Improvement is top tier television only real intellectuals understand. The amount of sheer genius that goes into scenes like this is not something the average human is intellegent enough to understand
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
you can really see how the Frasier people ripped a lot of this off
1 MayorEmanuel 2018-05-22
30 Rock was an 8 year award machine. You’re trying to hard to counter jerk.
1 cultish_alibi 2018-05-22
Did you watch the clip? None of what they described in the article actually happened. He said "I liked that thing you did" and she said "Thanks" and then talked about it a bit.
1 liamemsa 2018-05-22
Do you think I actually watch the clips? Like most people, I form an opinion and argue it before even clicking on the article.
1 SlackBabo 2018-05-22
Same who has time for nuance I want to be mad now
1 liamemsa 2018-05-22
I know, RIGHT?!
1 nybbas 2018-05-22
I looked up the skit, and the response to it. People are fucking retards. It's like the thing she is doing, is the exact opposite of what the retards think she is doing, because they do not understand comedy. They literally think she is saying that we should all just eat cake instead of worrying about the shit going on in society.
1 watermark02 2018-05-22
Letterman is lame.
1 liamemsa 2018-05-22
Fun fact, an anagram of LETTERMAN is LAMER TENT.
1 Psycho_Robot 2018-05-22
Talented female comedians really are being pushed out of comedy, but it's not by the patriarchy. Instead, they're being pushed out by their own industry media. Rather than focusing on female comedians who are actually good, like Kathleen Madigan, they focus on trash tier social media clowns like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman, who stay relevant by constantly bitching about how they're not paid as much as Dave Chappelle, but who can't actually pull an audience and never achieve real success.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
Silverman is not funny, but she has been working her ass off for years.
You know they once tried to put her in Star Trek Voyager as a full-time cast member?
That's how bad it got for Voyager
1 Psyman2 2018-05-22
At least Silverman produces content. Schumer just rips off others and throws a vagina joke in between.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
Yeah, I've never found her funny, but she is definitely a hard worker.
I am vaguely remembering a part in Maria Bamford's show where she and Tig Notaro are talking to Maria and I thought that scene was funny, but I don't remember what's happening in it.
1 ironicshitpostr 2018-05-22
Her scene in the Aristocrats says otherwise, as did the defamation lawsuit
1 Awayfone 2018-05-22
The Gilbert Gottfried joke?
1 ironicshitpostr 2018-05-22
No, the Joe Franklin bit.
1 MooseHeckler 2018-05-22
Say what you will about the other two, but the Bammer is golden.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
I think she's brilliant. I liked Notaro, too, when I saw her live on the cancer tour
1 MooseHeckler 2018-05-22
Notaro has always seemed one note, if talented to me.
1 PurpleIcy 2018-05-22
What's the difference between a vagina and a joke?
One doesn't smell like fish.
1 die_rattin 2018-05-22
A joke didn’t give me chlamydia
1 PurpleIcy 2018-05-22
Neither did vagina, just your stupidity by not choosing bussy.
1 captainpriapism 2018-05-22
nah she just had the connections initially
1 Mort_DeRire 2018-05-22
You're wrong. It may be a le hot take on here, but Sarah Silverman is funny.
1 _pennwolf 2018-05-22
Silverman is predictable and unoriginal. I could walk onto a college campus and hear the same shit for free. Tired, same old shit. No depth, no originality, no surprise.
1 Mort_DeRire 2018-05-22
Maybe nowadays, but she was definitely funny in the past.
1 rhyme-ocerus 2018-05-22
Chelsea Peretti is really funny too
1 Power_Incarnate 2018-05-22
I find her character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine insufferable, the show got better when they had to write her out for a while cause of her kid.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
her standup and parts on Kroll Show are transcendent
1 TryingMyBestOK 2018-05-22
Ali Wong is by far one of the best comedians i have ever seen.
1 DistortedLines 2018-05-22
I hope this is some 4th level irony because that is the most retarded shit I've heard today. She's the definition of boring, I'd say she's one of the worst "known" comedians right now.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
can she do a goddamn special while not knocked up?
I don't have a problem with it, but is that just the schtick now?
1 froibo 2018-05-22
I thought the same thing when I saw the ad for her new stand-up. She must do a special just to cover the cost of the kids.
1 TryingMyBestOK 2018-05-22
No way! I think she's gold. Her first special had my wife and I on the floor dying from laughter. She's just a nasty bitch lol
1 tron_funkin_blow 2018-05-22
meh
1 Pickled_Kagura 2018-05-22
Sarah Silverman is hilarious
1 Psycho_Robot 2018-05-22
I liked her in Wreck-It Ralph, but that's just because the talented writers gave her something funny to say. When she had to write her own shit, like her short lived show on comedy central, it was a disaster. All I remember from it is her singing about how pancake batter smells like cum. But that's how it always goes with these fake female comedians propped up by the beta media. They tell jokes almost exclusively about sex and dating, and it wears thin very quickly, and they have no other cards up their sleeves.
1 Clopernicus 2018-05-22
I liked her show and I like her standup. I don't think it's fair at all to compare Sarah Silverman to Amy Schumer.
1 the_bass_saxophone 2018-05-22
They get where they get because they are sexy and their talents don't threaten the guys.
1 Psycho_Robot 2018-05-22
Silverman is kinda cute, but Schumer is not sexy at all. The fact that it was used to refer to her even indirectly is a crime against humanity.
1 tron_funkin_blow 2018-05-22
Sarah Silverman is like 90% poop jokes. Not even shit jokes. She calls the shit poop. She is not funny. The best part of her show was when the voice of the real wisdom cube decided he was a huge fan of TAB soda pop.
1 tfdidido 2018-05-22
Fucking this
There is probably a good deal of sexism in there too, but feminists outlets need to start thinking for a moment
1 watermark02 2018-05-22
Oh come on, Amy Schumer just used that as a negotiating strategy to get more money from Netflix, and it worked, she got her pay increased (not to Chappelle's level of course but it did go up). I would use everything at my disposal to try and get paid more in negotiations as well, I don't blame her. You make it sound like she was going all through the interview circuit complaining about how she didn't get paid as much as Chappelle because she's a woman, which is not the case.
1 siskonaut 2018-05-22
Iliza Shlesinger is very good.
1 rationalhuckleberry 2018-05-22
Next they’ll say Ghostbusters (new) was a comedic masterpiece.
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
hey guess what
the original Ghostbusters wasn't really that funny either and Bill Murray is overrated as shit.
But the new Ghostbusters was just pure garbage, we can agree there.
1 die_rattin 2018-05-22

1 jchon720 2018-05-22

1 Che_Gueporna 2018-05-22

Like if ghey went full crazy with it, like her killing his new dates or something, that would be funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtJFb_P2j48
1 madman24k 2018-05-22
Maybe this is less about gender and more about the fact that he's like 90? And especially for Letterman being former king of late night, I wouldn't expect him to think his words are meaningless. Honestly, anyone in his position, regardless of gender, would act in a similar manner, because seniority.
1 Ed_BotteredToast 2018-05-22

Instead of saying women are as funny as men (which is a lie) now they're saying male opinions on comedy don't matter.
Imagine being so Gussy flustered that your movies and shows fail that you just tell people they don't know what comedy is.
1 tfdidido 2018-05-22
Tina fey?
So many decent women comedians
and they choose fucking tina fey
This is what bothers me, if you are a good women comedian you not only have to deal with the sexism, you have to deal with other women comedians that are way worse than you are getting more attention and exposure than deserved from feminist outlets trying to push an agenda.
1 watermark02 2018-05-22
Mr female comedian hipster over here
1 mcslibbin 2018-05-22
didn't even name another comic
1 Rambo1stBlood 2018-05-22
I think it would be a lot easier if any women in comedy would understand one thing: When David Letterman says the sheet cake joke is good, he is not saying it from a place of authority, or implying that his opinion constitutes approval.
Does anyone really think that when someone says "I thought that was funny" they really mean "I am an authority figure and i have the power to condone this and approve it as funny." ? It's kind of absurd to take it that way.
1 SAC-Lawn_Gnome 2018-05-22
I don't think this is a good comment.
1 Rambo1stBlood 2018-05-22
Listen, you don't have the authority to tell me what a good comment is with your OP authority.
Also, if you said it was a good comment I would be mad too. Apparently that is how things work now.
1 watermark02 2018-05-22
Tina Fey is a big figure in comedy, imo I definitely have more respect for her as a comic than Letterman. Why would she need his approval?
As for Bloom, she is no Tina Fey and she shouldn't let her head get too big.
1 do0rkn0b 2018-05-22
I'd bang her but I'm not listening to her mouth running.
