I'm not even sure what your point is. Yeah I'd rather sleep with a dakimakura of my waifu Renge-chan than with some random 3D slut but that doesn't mean I'm desperate, it's the opposite, it implies that I have standards.

>maron >comedy gatekeeper

lol

maron is incel

like 70% of his netflix show felt like it was just "why wont 25 year old women fuck me?!"

And it wasn't even Netflix. IFC, lol.

omg that's somehow worse

Nah, right in line with IFC's programming.

wat, forgettable?

Eh, I enjoyed it for a time.

Gas all incels /r/Drama war now.

Maron thinks that Mitzi Shore was a gatekeeper

https://twitter.com/marcmaron/status/984090780133351426?lang=en

It's going full circle

Mitzi Shore

Owned the comedy store

Mother of Pauly Shore

Well that just explained the mystery of Pauly Shores career.

Were you alive in the 90s? Pauly Shore was the poster boy for early MTV.

Do you know anybody who likes pauly shore?

I don't hate him. He's a harmless relic of a bygone era.

I loved him in Encino Man with Brendan Frasier and In the Army Now is still a classic tbh

I liked Son in Law unironically.

Biodome is a classic

he was great in the goofy movie

Not really a “Maron thinks” thing, she objectively was. She owned the comedy store and decided who got spots, making tonnes of careers.

His character on Glow was somehow more likable than he is in real life.

maron

Literally who

A comedian whose main accomplishment is that he got into podcasting early enough to be considered a "trailblazer."

Though he is arguably very good in his supporting role on the Netflix series GLOW.

He's known as a "comedian's comedian" for some reason. Personally I like his show, but calling him that diminishes what people like Doug Stanhope do.

diminishes what people like Doug Stanhope do.

How does anyone diminish being an alcoholic?

Listen, no one is more proud of our alcoholics and thankful for their service than I am. But, Maron even quit at that.

Something major is afoot when not one but two comedians whose material deals with (mostly female) insecurity adeptly confront two of comedy’s biggest, most popular dudes.

On what fucking planet is Maron considered a huge comic and ever considered in the league of Letterman? Christ, Tina Fey alone should have Maron getting approval from her. He is a fucking nobody.

ikr? tina fey wrote mean girls so she is surely entitled to kween status on this sub

meanwhile what the fuck has maron ever done apart from shill for stamps lol

People can say whatever they want about the rest of the article but I'm here to be on the front lines for the Tina Fey Defense Force.

woop woop you gg grl

For me, mean girls can only be trumped by Easy A and DONT YOU FUCKING DARE SAY SHIT ABOUT MY GIRL EMMA STONE! 😍😤

she legitimately looks like an alien. Her eyes have taken over her face, and not in a good way

said the 2/10 uggo

Kek

Which makes them an 8 here.

No but he's right ed. Emma is a shit waifu and that movie is not as good as mean girls.

Is it because she has a vagina?

Precisely

Emma Stone has never wowed me in a single role. She's likable at best. Lindsay Lohan was hotter, funnier and a better singer.

Emma Stone's sole advantage is that her parents loved her.

I'm not saying Lindsay Lohan < Emma Stone. I love both but it's just that I find Easy A more enjoyable than Mean Girls. Still, I love both movies.

STAMPS.COM

30 rock is one of the better comedies but it wasn't really due to her as much as a team effort. The down side is her movies other than mean girls which still isn't comedically amazing, great but not golden, most of them are awful. Like she gets by a lot on her name to talk unfunny shut about having babies and shit.

The flip side is maroon isn't funny. And neither are most women. Women are so butthurt by it they'll hold up people who aren't even comedians, Tina fey is not a comedian she's a comedy writer, if she were just a comedian she'd be fucking entirely unknown. Women just aren't that funny and there's really no way to go around that. Even their best are largely garbage. Tbf I don't find most males funny either. Prefer comedy shows which have more room for set ups.

She also wrote Kimmy Schmidt.

Kimmy Schmidt has good lines here and there and a few good performances but my god has the plotting turned into a bunch of frantic mugging in the past few years. It's like a Disney Channel show for adults.

It really caught lightning in a bottle with the first season and kinda petered out but I still thought it was funny even though the plot lines were less than stellar.

caught lightning in a bottle with the first season and kinda petered out

So, a Netflix show.

i dunno, i'm probably in the minority here but i didn't find the show funny at all. Didn't even crack a smile the entire first episode so i didn't bother continuing - which is a shame cuz i love 30 rock and was hoping for more goodness.

Tina fey is not a comedian she's a comedy writer

aren't most comedians both?

Are you defining comedian as "comic actor"? "standup comic"?

Because a comedy writer is a kind of comedian.

A comedian does standup. Tina fey is a writer who writes comedy. She does standup too but she shouldn't.

Baldwin basically carried 30 Rock by himself, the rest of the cast was just gravy

Tracy Morgan, the Dennis character, even the others have their moments. Jack was amazing but so many good plot lines. Milf Island, greenzo, Seinfeld vision, Dennis, Tracey and even jennas plots were funny-the Janice joplin biopic.

Funny thing is nobody cares about letterman anymore either

That doesn't take away from his career. It is one thing to be in the twilight of your career and another to be a fucking nobody your entire life.

Letterman shaped a comedic generation and is a historical icon.

Same thing with Hitler. But I bet no one cares about his opinions either

You’d lose that bet

Letterman is like maybe half a step above Leno. In general late night comedy is lame.

That fucker hasnt been funny since the 90s, and obviously has the worst opinions on comedy considering he chose the Stangels to be his head writers

Letterman is a hasbeen and I've never heard of this Marron dude in my entire life (until today).

Well thankfully comics have more respect for the craft than some random teenager to 20 something Redditor that has the attention span of a goldfish.

never heard of either of them but then seppo's aren't funny enuff to be worth my time

Literally haven't heard these names or seen a single person in this article my whole life. They are all who's

so...you don't watch television?

...yes? why the fuck would I watch television with set schedules when I can just download / stream what I actually want whenever the fuck I want?

I download and stream content too, I just watch things that arent autistic kids streaming fortnite or whatever

Cool I don't either. What about the television?

You've never heard of David Letterman? Are you like 12?

Yea really haven't and add another 14

How the hell can you be 24 and have never heard of David Letterman? Are you from a remote Bhutanese village or something?

Bullshit

maybe they're projecting Louis CK's success onto Maron? Like, they need a male king of comedy figure and CK has stepped out, so they pull the guy that has a similar tv show and career duration and talked to Obama once

Letterman said Tina Fey's cake sketch was actually funny so I'm pretty sure the fucker has alzheimers or some shit.

He's consistently in the running for #1 podcast on Itunes.

Ok and how about having amazing comedy specials? Having a bunch of people listen to political comedian podcasts isn't impressing me when it comes to listing top tier comics.

People still talk up comedy material from decades ago on specials. No one cares about a podcast that probably gets outperformed by random political dudes like Ben Shapiro.

No one cares about a podcast that probably gets outperformed by random political dudes like Ben Shapiro.

No, he's consistently in the running for the most popular podcast in the world. It changes from time to time, but he is often #1. Much different scale than Ben Shapiro.

I keep looking up numbers and I consistently see NPR stuff and Ben Shapiro at his level or above him and guys like Joe Rogan blowing him out of the water on top of a huge career across multiple venues.

Mark Marons wikipidia page says what I said.

You should probably check actual independent charts then instead of listening to his public relations people that update his wiki.

Joe Rogan is up there too, but like Maron, he's an interviewer, not a comedian.

...he's a comedian? I mean he's been touring for about 20 years, he has lots of specials. If Joe Rogan isn't a comedian then only a handful of people are comedians.

he's definitely a comedian. you can say that his comedy isn't that great (it isn't), but he's been performing stand-up comedy for many years

No one cares

I love Maron, but you're right. He has a podcast (big fuckin' deal), a couple comedy specials, and a failed show on IFC. He's not huge.

I don't really consider Maron to be a comedian, TBH. He's a decent interview host who can get some interesting people on the program and he lets them chat in a relaxed setting (at least when he's not fanboying or talking all over everyone in one of his manic episodes). He should really just give up the whole "comedy" angle and focus on being a showcase for other people's talent and stories.

He's a great host, imo. The interview with Brolin, Brolin was funnier than Maron.

I like his specials, but that's just me.

Brolin was funnier than Maron

Well...Maron's not very funny. He's a great interviewer.

That's a fair statement.

Remember when Norm said that to him and Maron looked like Norm just throw all his cats in a woodchipper

I thought he was on a Netflix or Hulu or Amazon show too, the one with what's her name from Community?

GLOW? It's okay. He plays an exaggeration of himself imo

Yeah, that's it - I heard about it but never watched.

Only reason I started it was cause you get to see Allison Brie titties.

It was about damn time

the show itself is also quite good

Same with Joe Rogan. He does some standup, but he's an interviewer more than a comedian.

... when he's interviewing.

He's more of a comedian than an interviewer when he's standing on stage telling jokes though.

Yeah but he’s not a very good comedian. Much better host/presenter/whatever

i actually saw his most recent stand up on netflix and it was pretty good

I don't really consider Maron to be a comedian, TBH.

you might not like his comedy but he's absolutely a comedian. he's been touring as professional comic for like 25+ years.

I don't even know who he is.

Says a lot about someone's level of fame if r/drama is the first place where I get to hear his name.

DAE honestly have no fucking idea who Maron is?

Wait. If men's opinions on comedy are obsolete and women aren't funny, what is there left?

Kill me now.

Political war doesn't decide who is alt right, only who is alt left.

More like alt-funny.

Don't you know?

There's never any female gatekeepers like [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitzi_Shore](Mitzi Shore) it's just men all the way down to infinity.

I did not realize Pauly Shore was her son! That explains a lot about his career, frankly.

Wait until this person finds out these interviews are planned out and scripted ahead of time. It’s gonna blow their mind.

What do you mean? For Letterman's show they would likely figure out roughly what topics they would be covering beforehand, not much more than that. Maron's show does not have anywhere near the production value to justify anything resembling a script. I'm not sure what you're basing this off of.

Yes tv is very unscripted they just hope it goes well

Yes, two extremely successful and well spoken comedians would be incapable of carrying a conversation on their own.

The other is a fucking podcast.

I have no idea who maron is tbh. But yes those two people became successful and well known by winging their careers.

What's more likely:

Two extremely well spoken individuals are so unconfident in their ability to carry a conversation that they take the time to painstakingly write out an hour-long script and rehearse it enough so it sounds natural.

Or

Two extremely well spoken individuals had a conversation, which they can do quite easily due to the fact that they are extremely well spoken.

Right tv isn’t scripted 👍

This is a great example of when /r/drama users try so hard to be counter-culture and above it all that they just come off looking retarded.

Are you lost?

Three powerful executives aren't going to take that chance, script that shit.

I don't think this was scripted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxMcHunIo14

Tbh I just wanted to argue with that guy

Marc Maron's show is a fucking podcast. Nobody is putting in the time to script that.

This is the pinnacle of comedy

If you want to help US politics, you need to stop this. I don't mean publishing idiotic stories, I mean publishing.

Would you look at that. Intelligent life on Twitter.

Wow, as someone who has the rA1N-m4n gene for autism, this is 'tism on a whole other level.

Salon's claim to fame is giving billboard quotes for HBO shows.

Wait, when did that rag try to normalize pedophiles?

they had a series of articles titled "im a pedophile but not a monster" and shit like that, written in a apologetic tone by an actual pedophile

they deleted them all from the site when they wanted to jump on the anti milo bandwagon because obviously itd make them look like hypocrites

The fuck is this shit? yes he a monster

I’d like to be able to believe that women can be funny, but I’ve yet to encounter a shred of evidence that would support that position.

Female comedians are really insecure.

So, is this an article or a fanfiction?

Yeah i tried to read it but it just came across as gibberish.

They're only gatekeepers if you let them.

Wow, Slate really grasps at straws here...

males in general are obsolete

Ikr, time to cut my dick off and join women.

I mean Tina Fey is super funny and everyone thought she was super funny way before all this culture war stuff came into full bloom.

let's be real, though. Jimmy Fallon dissing Amy Poehler is like Forrest Gump calling Gomer Pyle stupid.

She can't do standup, so she's not a real comedian.

eh

What Fey is responding to, perhaps more acutely than the audience, is the second function powering Letterman’s remark: Letterman isn’t just presenting his approval of her sketch in the spirit of comedic bonhomie. As one of comedy’s high priests, he’s doing so from a position of superiority. He clearly expects Fey to be moved by his support, but he also seems to believe his opinion carries real authority, and he expects her to consider his approval definitive. She does not.

Sounds like Tina's a jerk to me. David Letterman started hosting Late Night when she was literally 12 years old. He started doing stand-up when she was five. Why can't it be assumed that he is someone that she would look up to for approval? Why can't it just be "He's an older, wiser comedian that she admired in her youth" instead of "He's a man, she's a woman?"

Jesus Christ.

The vast majority of these 'think pieces' are just the author furiously masturbating while narrating what they imagine people are thinking in order to support their derangement.

Even if these losers do get paid in pocket lint and expired StarBucks coupons, the alternative is probably them writing homoerotic Gilmore Girls fanfiction, which frankly, no one wants to see.

Tina Fey has a lot less legitimate success than redditors admit. Two shows that had terrible ratings, and one that's achieved low ratings on netflix.

Mean Girls was 15 years ago.

Two shows that had terrible ratings

30 rock was a good comedy on network television. Of course it got terrible ratings. If it isn't a cop drama or one of chuck lorre's polished turds, the boomers who still watch network TV are not going to fuck with it.

30 Rock is good. Sorry that your opinions are bad

Imagine thinking that 30 Rock isn’t on the same level as The Office in terms of being a cult classic lmfaoooo

I like it better than The Office cause it didn't have a large drop-off in quality towards the end.

30 rock is streets ahead

terrible ratings

Two and a Half Men and the Big Bang Theory had excellent ratings through their entire runs

Oh, so did Home Improvement.

Americans have fucking trash-tier taste in comedy.

Don't you insult tim allen

you can really see how the Frasier people ripped a lot of this off

30 Rock was an 8 year award machine. You’re trying to hard to counter jerk.

Did you watch the clip? None of what they described in the article actually happened. He said "I liked that thing you did" and she said "Thanks" and then talked about it a bit.

Do you think I actually watch the clips? Like most people, I form an opinion and argue it before even clicking on the article.

Same who has time for nuance I want to be mad now

I know, RIGHT?!

I looked up the skit, and the response to it. People are fucking retards. It's like the thing she is doing, is the exact opposite of what the retards think she is doing, because they do not understand comedy. They literally think she is saying that we should all just eat cake instead of worrying about the shit going on in society.

Letterman is lame.

Fun fact, an anagram of LETTERMAN is LAMER TENT.

Talented female comedians really are being pushed out of comedy, but it's not by the patriarchy. Instead, they're being pushed out by their own industry media. Rather than focusing on female comedians who are actually good, like Kathleen Madigan, they focus on trash tier social media clowns like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman, who stay relevant by constantly bitching about how they're not paid as much as Dave Chappelle, but who can't actually pull an audience and never achieve real success.

Silverman is not funny, but she has been working her ass off for years.

You know they once tried to put her in Star Trek Voyager as a full-time cast member?

That's how bad it got for Voyager

At least Silverman produces content. Schumer just rips off others and throws a vagina joke in between.

Yeah, I've never found her funny, but she is definitely a hard worker.

I am vaguely remembering a part in Maria Bamford's show where she and Tig Notaro are talking to Maria and I thought that scene was funny, but I don't remember what's happening in it.

Yeah, I've never found her funny

Her scene in the Aristocrats says otherwise, as did the defamation lawsuit

The Gilbert Gottfried joke?

No, the Joe Franklin bit.

Say what you will about the other two, but the Bammer is golden.

I think she's brilliant. I liked Notaro, too, when I saw her live on the cancer tour

Notaro has always seemed one note, if talented to me.

What's the difference between a vagina and a joke?

One doesn't smell like fish.

A joke didn’t give me chlamydia

Neither did vagina, just your stupidity by not choosing bussy.

Silverman is not funny, but she has been working her ass off for years.

nah she just had the connections initially

You're wrong. It may be a le hot take on here, but Sarah Silverman is funny.

Silverman is predictable and unoriginal. I could walk onto a college campus and hear the same shit for free. Tired, same old shit. No depth, no originality, no surprise.

Maybe nowadays, but she was definitely funny in the past.

Chelsea Peretti is really funny too

I find her character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine insufferable, the show got better when they had to write her out for a while cause of her kid.

her standup and parts on Kroll Show are transcendent

Ali Wong is by far one of the best comedians i have ever seen.

I hope this is some 4th level irony because that is the most retarded shit I've heard today. She's the definition of boring, I'd say she's one of the worst "known" comedians right now.

can she do a goddamn special while not knocked up?

I don't have a problem with it, but is that just the schtick now?

I thought the same thing when I saw the ad for her new stand-up. She must do a special just to cover the cost of the kids.

No way! I think she's gold. Her first special had my wife and I on the floor dying from laughter. She's just a nasty bitch lol

meh

Sarah Silverman is hilarious

I liked her in Wreck-It Ralph, but that's just because the talented writers gave her something funny to say. When she had to write her own shit, like her short lived show on comedy central, it was a disaster. All I remember from it is her singing about how pancake batter smells like cum. But that's how it always goes with these fake female comedians propped up by the beta media. They tell jokes almost exclusively about sex and dating, and it wears thin very quickly, and they have no other cards up their sleeves.

I liked her show and I like her standup. I don't think it's fair at all to compare Sarah Silverman to Amy Schumer.

They get where they get because they are sexy and their talents don't threaten the guys.

Silverman is kinda cute, but Schumer is not sexy at all. The fact that it was used to refer to her even indirectly is a crime against humanity.

Sarah Silverman is like 90% poop jokes. Not even shit jokes. She calls the shit poop. She is not funny. The best part of her show was when the voice of the real wisdom cube decided he was a huge fan of TAB soda pop.

Fucking this

There is probably a good deal of sexism in there too, but feminists outlets need to start thinking for a moment

they focus on trash tier social media clowns like Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman, who stay relevant by constantly bitching about how they're not paid as much as Dave Chappelle, but who can't actually pull an audience and never achieve real success.

Oh come on, Amy Schumer just used that as a negotiating strategy to get more money from Netflix, and it worked, she got her pay increased (not to Chappelle's level of course but it did go up). I would use everything at my disposal to try and get paid more in negotiations as well, I don't blame her. You make it sound like she was going all through the interview circuit complaining about how she didn't get paid as much as Chappelle because she's a woman, which is not the case.

Iliza Shlesinger is very good.

Next they’ll say Ghostbusters (new) was a comedic masterpiece.

hey guess what

the original Ghostbusters wasn't really that funny either and Bill Murray is overrated as shit.

But the new Ghostbusters was just pure garbage, we can agree there.

lol okay

Rachel Bloom's show managed to 3-peat as the lowest rated Fall show on network TV.

crazy ex girlfriend is not a funny show, no

Yeah, i watched the first couple of episodes hoping for something good. But meh.

Like if ghey went full crazy with it, like her killing his new dates or something, that would be funny.

any comedy with hour long episodes is so hard to fucking do

i think Green Wing pulled it off because of all the transitions

Atlanta is good, but there is a lot of drama in it too.

Slate has really circled the drain. I knew it was bad, but not this bad.

😴😴😴

At least its not a random TrollX thread.

Some women are learning to stand up for themselves and try not to care what other people think.

And this is news somehow?

Given that Slate is 90% white meh-n, please ban Slate X X

In what godforsaken universe is Rachel Bloom considered a top comic?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtJFb_P2j48

As one of comedy’s high priests, he’s doing so from a position of superiority. He clearly expects Fey to be moved by his support, but he also seems to believe his opinion carries real authority, and he expects her to consider his approval definitive.

Maybe this is less about gender and more about the fact that he's like 90? And especially for Letterman being former king of late night, I wouldn't expect him to think his words are meaningless. Honestly, anyone in his position, regardless of gender, would act in a similar manner, because seniority.

True.

/r/funny is male comedy

The top half of this post is like srs3

This effort is in one sense typical of Letterman, whose rebrand consists largely of excessive avuncular praise. But it’s doing a couple of other things, too. First, it’s participating in a long-standing comic-on-comic tradition of aggressively bonding the two comics together against the unwashed masses who get offended at jokes. As the comic-on-comic interview has ossified into a genre, this is one of its most predictable beats: the wry moment when the comics sympathize and agree that crowds have gotten hypersensitive and just don’t get what “we” do.

Mr. Thesaurus author guy is bit of a try-hard, eh?

avuncular

ossified

Look stuff up, you might learn something. You probably won't turn into a prissy snob either.

Instead of saying women are as funny as men (which is a lie) now they're saying male opinions on comedy don't matter.

Imagine being so Gussy flustered that your movies and shows fail that you just tell people they don't know what comedy is.

Tina fey?

So many decent women comedians

and they choose fucking tina fey

This is what bothers me, if you are a good women comedian you not only have to deal with the sexism, you have to deal with other women comedians that are way worse than you are getting more attention and exposure than deserved from feminist outlets trying to push an agenda.

Mr female comedian hipster over here

didn't even name another comic

I think it would be a lot easier if any women in comedy would understand one thing: When David Letterman says the sheet cake joke is good, he is not saying it from a place of authority, or implying that his opinion constitutes approval.

Does anyone really think that when someone says "I thought that was funny" they really mean "I am an authority figure and i have the power to condone this and approve it as funny." ? It's kind of absurd to take it that way.

I don't think this is a good comment.

Listen, you don't have the authority to tell me what a good comment is with your OP authority.

Also, if you said it was a good comment I would be mad too. Apparently that is how things work now.

Tina Fey is a big figure in comedy, imo I definitely have more respect for her as a comic than Letterman. Why would she need his approval?

As for Bloom, she is no Tina Fey and she shouldn't let her head get too big.

I'd bang her but I'm not listening to her mouth running.

tina fey and rachel bloom arent even funny at all though lol

they just go through the motions and people pretend to be entertained for some reason

Tina Fey is one of the most accomplished comedy writers in the business

>aren't even funny at all though lol

That's wrong. You're wrong.

lol accomplished in what? snl and shitty sitcoms as a direct result of snl? please

name one thing shes done ever thats even remotely funny

Mean Girls 😤👹💄👚👜👠👙💅👸

feels weird to agree with you 😑🤔

i mean i liked rock30 but i agree. She isnt THAT accomplished lmao

That's ok because the audience decides. Unfunny comedians can tell each other lame jokes.

Can we get off the vagina's wild ride that's not wild at all?

Yeah, Tina is so strong for feeling bad for telling a fucking joke that a bunch of retards didn't get. I didn't know about this bullshit "controversy", but it's hilarious how the article is somehow sticking up for tina fey getting bullied by humorless morons.

That's it boys, pack up your dicks, we're over.
