Let's take a moment to laugh at all the people who think that TERF is a gendered term, rather than just a 1-syllable synonym for "transphobic feminist."
For education, TERF is short for "trans-exclusionary radical feminist." Whenever someone says "TERF," they just mean "transphobic feminist." The term "transphobe" tends to bring up an image of a right-wing bigot, talking about how it was better when the queers were in the closet and the fags just kept it to themselves. TERF is a more descriptive term since it doesn't carry conservative baggage with it.
A bunch of TERFs, being feminists, decided to declare the label "TERF" misogynist. Never mind the fact that It's not gendered (I don't keep track of all my male feminists but I guarantee that any transphobic male feminist would get called a TERF just as readily).
Because most feminists are women, most TERFs are women. But TERF isn't a gendered word, any more than a nurse is a gendered word.
Now the whole "punch a TERF" thing is part of that other feminist idea that words are violence, so when you call a transwoman "Steve" it is okay for her to punch you. It's the same idea as punching Nazis (even ones that aren't an immediate threat) and people who say specific potty words. I'd recommend getting different friends if you think a tweet about #PunchaTERF or whatever represents an increased likelihood of violence; that isn't universal. It may require getting interests outside of feminism.
