I don't really watch anime, but I do read the occasional light novel. I tend to stay away from isekai because they're garbage, but I did have someone recommend one to me that I kind of liked, '俺の死亡フラグが留まるところを知らない'
Short synopsis is: Lead character wakes up in possession of the body of a minor villain from his favorite RPG video game. The twist is, he can't control his mouth (he talks like the villain) and everyone interprets his actions as villainous. He decided to play it up (act the part) while trying to avoid dying in the fight he knows is coming by exploiting his knowledge of the plot of the game.
There's an English translation floating around there that I've heard isn't half bad, but I read this in moonrunes and it's slightly above the normal complexity of a light novel in this genre. Also, it mostly avoids or subverts the common tropes that you might expect.
My kanji is pretty bad (I'm slowly working my way through 雪国 Snow Country) so I've found that light novels are a good way to help my literacy, but yeah... most of them are really bad. But what can you expect from YA fiction?
Also, why are LNs so anime-ish? That certainly isn't the case for western YA, which at least try not to be pandering trash.
Because you're only being exposed to ones that get translated either by weebs or for weebs. Imagine if all English literature was translated into other languages by Harry Potter slash fic fans. That's basically what you're dealing with.
I learned conversational Japanese a while ago, but my reading was always poor because I couldn't be fucked to learn the 2000 kanji you need to graduate highschool. Anyway, when I started to put effort into learning it and was looking for things to read, I realized quite quickly that 'fan translations' are done by people who are more or less fucking morons. It's no surprise what type of projects they do.
I learned conversational Japanese a while ago, but my reading was always poor because I couldn't be fucked to learn the 2000 kanji you need to graduate highschool.
Imagine learning how to speak one of the hardest foreign languages and still being basically illiterate. Should've done Core10k + Tae Kim like every Japan-obsessed gaijin.
Speaking isn't actually that bad... once you get conjugation down, Japanese is actually kind of simple and you can be very vague in how you talk and it's still mostly alright. There are a few stupid idiosyncrasies, like the million different counting systems that are based on the size and shape of items you are counting, but it's nothing like trying to memorize 8 different readings of a stupid pictograph and then multiplying that by a couple thousand.
Plus, I'm old, so I literally need a magnifying glass sometimes to even guess what the fuck I am looking at.
trying to memorize 8 different readings of a stupid pictograph and then multiplying that by a couple thousand
Cause that's a poor way of learning Kanji. You should learn vocabulary, not readings. I'ts better to know words like traffic, street, fucking mail order even than knowing 通 can be read as to, tou or tsuu and IN ONE CASE kayo.
counting systems that are based on the size and shape of items you are counting
LOL fuck them, 1つ 2つ everything like a proper baka gaijin would. (don't do that)
I'm old, so I literally need a magnifying glass sometimes to even guess what the fuck I am looking at
I'm 20ish and I use the windows magnifier sometimes too and my eyesight isn't all that bad. Btw 蹂躙 is my favorite 'fuck your eyes' word.
LN are basicly anime books, most of these people don't know what they are talking about. In japan LN are disctinguished from other novels by having anime style illustrations and anime-ish stories and characters.
NGNL is one of those shows that's far better than it has any reason to be. All it had to be was a generic isekai harem ecchi bullshit show. And you know what? It kind of is those things. It ticks off just about every box for each of those tropes. Pulled into another world, female-heavy cast, fanservice shots, etc. But somehow it manages to be a to more than that. The art is gorgeous, the characters are a ton of fun, it mocks itself (and everything else) all the time, and it manages to stay interesting throughout.
It's kinda hit or miss for me. I don't like it nearly as much as pretty much everyone else seems to. There are some really good parts but there are also some pretty terrible parts for me. I dunno, it's one of those things where I feel like people are so desperate for there to be a good isekai show that they latched onto it because it's decent in a sea of garbage.
I was actually super impressed, I heard about it before even seeing the trailer/who was in it and thought it would be just absolute shit but it was so good i've watched it 3 times with diff people now lol
If you realtalk want something that doesn't involve that then check out Cavalier of the Abyss, Gunjou Senki, Shut Hell, and Grimgar of Ash and Fantasy.
Currently popular genre of japanese fantasy where someone from our world is put into a fantasy world. Sometimes they die and get reincarnated, sometimes a portal opens up and sucks them in, something they're summoned deliberately as a hero.

I don't mind Isekai but holy shit is it over done now. One show got popular and all of a sudden everyone decides to copy and follow it. Honestly the genre is old as fuck.
Those who hunt elves is a good and there was another about three girls who became magical girls in a fantasy world and just wanted to go home.
Today's anime is slowly getting worse as waifu-trash taints everything around us.
The one with the magical girls is: Magic Knight Rayearth (I haven't see in it in forever).
The show that got it really popular was Re:Zero. I remember it being really popular when it came out but then others followed. Same waifu bullshit, same style, etc. Some mixed it up though like Overlord (max character in MMO gets teleported to the world he played in with all his skills.)
My favorite is still Resturant from Another World only because it skips what makes the copycats so awful.
Lol, Re:Zero didn't start this shit. The novel only started in 2012 and there was plenty of Isekai on Shosetsuka before that. Even the anime came after other stuff. Which should be obvious since Re:Zero's entire point is deconstructing the popular tropes established by prior works.
If you want to talk about the origins of Isekai, you need to go all the way back to stuff like El-Hazard, Fushigi Yugi, Escaflowne, Inuyasha, etc.
Yeah but Re:Zero was the one every tried to copy lately. Thats where it seemed to pick up steam.
Don't get me wrong there were literally dozens of entire animes around it but we really saw an explosion of it only recently. To the point where a publisher put out a statement saying "Stop sending these kinds of works"
Yeah but Re:Zero was the one every tried to copy lately.
It's really not.
A bunch of other really popular Isekai were written before it. And even got anime/manga adaptations before Re:Zero. And most have entirely different plotlines, themes and stories. It's just not accurate to say that most of the current Isekai explosion is recent, or that they were copying Re:Zero.
I mean, for fuck's sake even Re: Monster started in 2011. So not even the title of Re: Zero is that original.
Maybe Re:Zero is where you first heard of it. And maybe it's the one you like best. But it is absolutely not the originator of the trend.
Dang it's really ballsey what japanese war romanticizers are able to get away with. It'll be like someone's neo-nazi harem fanfic getting a netflix release in the west.
You gotta hand it to Japan, they’ve somehow gotten away with pretty much never apologizing for war crimes, continuing to have an emperor who is hailed with Banzai cheers by government officials, and returning to the flag of their ultranationalist government. Imagine if Germany in the 90s had just said fuck it and gone back to the imperial style flag
Yeah, I know. Apparently he has no idea how to shift subject because his English teacher was a fucking mongoloid and he was too busy huffing glue to learn the bare minimum of how to write sensibly.
It's a bit more complicated than that. There have been apologies made by various Japanese officials over the years, albeit of questionable sincerity, including some by the current emperor, and Abe was elected more for his economic policies than because he pledged to MJGA. The Japanese were extremely pissed off when his wife was caught funding the Japanese equivalent of the Hitler Nursery, too.
But yeah, when your government is literally run by Imperial cultists, something has gone terribly wrong.
Imagine the Chinese, busy killing each other for the past few hundred years for shit like slightly different pronunciation or spelling of the word 'bamboo' and then the island pictogram thieves barging in and saying they want a piece of that ass too.
also, i thought this stuff was common knowledge? people haven't heard of Most massacres but this and the holocaust and the Armenian massacre are among the more common ones i thought.
TFW imperalistic invasion isn't a good justification for considering someone evil.
Also people obviously don't give a fuck about Hiroshima and Nagasaki because innocent people died because shitloads more civilians died in conventional bombing in Tokyo alone, let alone the rest of the world.
Also people obviously don't give a fuck about Hiroshima and Nagasaki
bombing pearl harbor was evil though
See you reinforced my point. As long as mayos do it, it's fine for you. Hell the only thing you people whine about more is the holocaust where more white people died even though there's been ten massacres about the same size since then.
Sorry I'm not a mayo teenager planning to shoot up a school anytime soon but you'd downplay that to drug medications.
Jews aren't considered white
Wait.... that would make jews actually the wealthiest and most powerful demographic in all of America, single handidly wiping out the "white privilege" argument for anti-semitism. Tread carefully shitlord.
At least to everyone who didn't sleep through their middle school and high school history classes. Literally every coverage of WWII covers the rape of Nanking.
Which is why the reactions are so hilarious. It's like someone claiming they only just now found out that slavery happened.
Goblin Slayer is good but it may as well just be Hentai at this point. It seems like the author can't go one fucking chapter without mentioning how much those pesky goblins love to rape women so much.
I haven't read any of the recent chapters so that would probably explain it, but yea I agree with you that it's nice to have a full on grimdark fantasy setting which is why I said I thought it was good.
Lol It's fantasy you fucking nerds. It doesn't matter if he puts that in a story. I guess they have a right to pull it if they wanted to, but what don't these pussies complain about these days?
yo is this sub new? I never noticed it on the homepage before but now it wont go away. Who ever is making posts for this is so petty, anything i've seen within this sub makes me hate this site. I can picture all the annoying people from every other corner of this site congregating here and circle jerking arguments to fill there daily catch of tears and cap locks. any one that likes this place I hate you and mostly and one else in your life probably hates you, low key or not.
Wow, I thought Japan was safe from the enforcement of political correctness by SJWs because they're a homogeneous society that doesn't have any (((diversity))). It's sad to see even Japan fall to the disease that is SJW ideology.
This really shows the directors of those animation companies are completely unaware of their source material. Who in their right mind would look at this and think "yup, this would go well with our Chinese viewers"?
This is when the Korean side of me kicks in. To dismiss this kind of issue as trivial/SJW-esque or as the Chinese/Korean attempt to sabotage a Japanese artist? Learn the fucking history and get back to me. Personally I don't understand how the US in general can be so japanophile after the Pearl Harbour attack and so many soldiers died in Asia Pacific.
/u/makeitcool So you think that Americans should be suspicious of Japanese media because of Pearl Harbor? This is the kind of retarded reasoning that is weirdly acceptable when it comes from a left-wing imbecile yet would be mocked relentlessly as bigotry by SRD if they had any self-awareness.
/u/makeitcool Because you squinty-eyed yellow bastards fought against my pals MURRICA in the Korean War I downvote every Korean on reddit, hope you understand.

Anime is trash, isekai anime is ten miles below sea level kind of trash and directly responsible for the decline of Western society.
If you want your fill of island chink media read rapey (or straight up rape) visual novels instead.

Isekai is basically SI fiction, if SI fiction was actually published.

Western YA does not try not to be pandering trash lmao
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
Because you have the cause/effect relationship backward.
The LNs come first, then they get optioned into anime because it's a proven money maker. It's like asking why superhero comics are so much like movie.
1 pitterpatterwater 2018-06-07
Doesn't explain why they typically have anime drawings on the cover.
1 kuro-no-shinigami 2018-06-07
That's just later editions of the volumes after the anime has been released because an anime cover is more catchy.
1 Regergek 2018-06-07
This is complete bullshit. They always have anime covers right from the start.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
That's just the currently popular aesthetic. You see the same art style in trendy manga too.
1 pitterpatterwater 2018-06-07
It makes sense for manga since it shares an art style with anime.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
So do light novels.

1 AckmanDESU 2018-06-07
I'd say Log Horizon was pretty fun to watch and No Game No Life was short enough to be worth watching.
Also is that anime about picking up girls in a dungeon an isekai? I'd say it's similar enough... It was fucking ecchi trash but I loved it.
1 VicisSubsisto 2018-06-07
No one in that one came from the real world so no. It's just fantasy.

My favorite is still Resturant from Another World only because it skips what makes the copycats so awful.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
Lol, Re:Zero didn't start this shit. The novel only started in 2012 and there was plenty of Isekai on Shosetsuka before that. Even the anime came after other stuff. Which should be obvious since Re:Zero's entire point is deconstructing the popular tropes established by prior works.
If you want to talk about the origins of Isekai, you need to go all the way back to stuff like El-Hazard, Fushigi Yugi, Escaflowne, Inuyasha, etc.
1 Lady_Otaku 2018-06-07
Yeah but Re:Zero was the one every tried to copy lately. Thats where it seemed to pick up steam.
Don't get me wrong there were literally dozens of entire animes around it but we really saw an explosion of it only recently. To the point where a publisher put out a statement saying "Stop sending these kinds of works"
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
It's really not.
A bunch of other really popular Isekai were written before it. And even got anime/manga adaptations before Re:Zero. And most have entirely different plotlines, themes and stories. It's just not accurate to say that most of the current Isekai explosion is recent, or that they were copying Re:Zero.
I mean, for fuck's sake even Re: Monster started in 2011. So not even the title of Re: Zero is that original.
Maybe Re:Zero is where you first heard of it. And maybe it's the one you like best. But it is absolutely not the originator of the trend.
1 Lady_Otaku 2018-06-07
I first heard of it with Magic Knight Rayearth and "Those Who Hunt Elves".
Wasn't ready for the second one to be honest. Thought it was completely different.
1 loli_esports 2018-06-07
Meanwhile Zipang 2 never
1 Kahina91 2018-06-07
Dang it's really ballsey what japanese war romanticizers are able to get away with. It'll be like someone's neo-nazi harem fanfic getting a netflix release in the west.
1 hyledog 2018-06-07
You gotta hand it to Japan, they’ve somehow gotten away with pretty much never apologizing for war crimes, continuing to have an emperor who is hailed with Banzai cheers by government officials, and returning to the flag of their ultranationalist government. Imagine if Germany in the 90s had just said fuck it and gone back to the imperial style flag
1 Shitposting_Skeleton 2018-06-07
The Imperial flag doesn't have the stigma of a Nazi flag tho.
1 NationalismIsFun 2018-06-07
And it's also much more aesthetically pleasing then the dumb boring tricolor they're stuck with now
1 Valdincan 2018-06-07
The japanese dont have a tricolour flag you retard.
1 A_Voe 2018-06-07
I think he was talking about the German flag
1 Valdincan 2018-06-07
Yeah, I know. Apparently he has no idea how to shift subject because his English teacher was a fucking mongoloid and he was too busy huffing glue to learn the bare minimum of how to write sensibly.
The absolute faggot.
1 NationalismIsFun 2018-06-07
Guilty as charged
1 storejet 2018-06-07
It does in like most of SouthEast and Eastern Asia.
1 Shitposting_Skeleton 2018-06-07
I was talking about the Imperial Germany flag you bussy-huffer.
1 Kazeshio 2018-06-07
I don't know what that word means, but it looks like I'd be very distraught if called that.
1 d4ddyd54m4 2018-06-07
No it doesn’t. Most people won’t even recognise it ffs
1 __Toradorable__ 2018-06-07
Germany would've been better for it.
1 MacAndShits 2018-06-07
would be more efficient to draw on paper because I wouldn't have to color a third of it
1 westofthetracks 2018-06-07
thats the secret to their success, theyre imitating america
1 hyledog 2018-06-07
They learned it from MacArthur I suppose
1 Baconlightning 2018-06-07
Then again I've never heard anyone denying the Rape of Nanking.
1 ParanoidDroid 2018-06-07
Well...they do in Japan.
1 T0yN0k 2018-06-07
It's because the Japanese are just so darn cute and charismatic.
1 dongas420 2018-06-07
It's a bit more complicated than that. There have been apologies made by various Japanese officials over the years, albeit of questionable sincerity, including some by the current emperor, and Abe was elected more for his economic policies than because he pledged to MJGA. The Japanese were extremely pissed off when his wife was caught funding the Japanese equivalent of the Hitler Nursery, too.
But yeah, when your government is literally run by Imperial cultists, something has gone terribly wrong.
1 hoseja 2018-06-07
Holy shit I didn't realise you linked to srd and almost died from all the pearl clutching about cleansed chinamen.
1 number_11310 2018-06-07
Imagine the Chinese, busy killing each other for the past few hundred years for shit like slightly different pronunciation or spelling of the word 'bamboo' and then the island pictogram thieves barging in and saying they want a piece of that ass too.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
You were not wrong about the histrionics.
1 I_FART_OUT_MY_BUTT69 2018-06-07
also, i thought this stuff was common knowledge? people haven't heard of Most massacres but this and the holocaust and the Armenian massacre are among the more common ones i thought.
1 Elite_AI 2018-06-07
Americans
1 Ebony_Eagle 2018-06-07
From what I've found a lot of people without any interest in military history have no knowledge of atrocities committed in the United States.
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
Attacking a military base is the worst thing ever but bombing millions of civilians is justified because anime.
Modern American opinion
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
Attacking a military base owned by the most powerful country in the world because you're an imperialistic Jap cunt is retarded and kind of evil.
Though I may be salty because they tortured Aussie POWs and have yet to apologize. God I hate Japanese culture
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
Attacking a military base is evil? Gee no wonder you say "civilians deserve to die" but muh poor soldiers
Yet weaboo americans eat loli porn like nothing.
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
Attacking a military base so you can take over the entire Pacific Ocean is pretty fucking evil, yes.
Reeeeetard.
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
Pretty flimsy justification. Yet bombing millions of civilians is perfectly just because the mayo culture doesn't sicken you.
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
TFW imperalistic invasion isn't a good justification for considering someone evil.
Also people obviously don't give a fuck about Hiroshima and Nagasaki because innocent people died because shitloads more civilians died in conventional bombing in Tokyo alone, let alone the rest of the world.
People care because atom bombs are scary.
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
See you reinforced my point. As long as mayos do it, it's fine for you. Hell the only thing you people whine about more is the holocaust where more white people died even though there's been ten massacres about the same size since then.
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
Take your ADHD medicine.
Jews aren't considered white, retard.
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
Sorry I'm not a mayo teenager planning to shoot up a school anytime soon but you'd downplay that to drug medications.
Wait.... that would make jews actually the wealthiest and most powerful demographic in all of America, single handidly wiping out the "white privilege" argument for anti-semitism. Tread carefully shitlord.
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
Fucking duh. I don't suppose you know how much money the USA gives to Israel, do you?
LOL. Who do you think you're talking to right now?
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
SOme fucking loser /r/drama user trying to redpill or jewishpill me fuck if I care
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
So why the fuck would I give a shit about the feelings of jews?
1 telandrias 2018-06-07
Because you care about white people so much.
1 Daxx46 2018-06-07
Jews aren't white...assuming that "white" is even actually a thing and not just an idea in the minds of racist dipshits.
And I don't care about white people that much, I just hate the Japanese.
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
It IS common knowledge.
At least to everyone who didn't sleep through their middle school and high school history classes. Literally every coverage of WWII covers the rape of Nanking.
Which is why the reactions are so hilarious. It's like someone claiming they only just now found out that slavery happened.
1 michael5029 2018-06-07
It was taught, but no one gave a shit about asian history in schools.
1 Awayfone 2018-06-07
Cant acknowledged Japan doing something do awful so close to the bombing of Hiroshima.
1 Mircy 2018-06-07
we've discussed this on the drama discord a couple times coupled with "I've seen hentai that reminds me of this so it's probably inspired by it"
jeez all it was was some chinese girls shishkababed
1 OldOrder 2018-06-07
lol weeb shit who cares
1 EvMBoat 2018-06-07
Mfw isekai has destroyed the straight fantasy genre and now I'm sad.
At least Goblin Slayer is good albeit edgy as fuck
1 Imgur_Lurker 2018-06-07
Henkyou no Roukishi - Bard Loen
Flat old school Knight fantasy is what i'd recommend
1 EvMBoat 2018-06-07
I will check it out thanks
1 Imgur_Lurker 2018-06-07
Np I like Fantasy too, only other one I can think of off the top of my head besides Gob Slayer and the spin off is
Maou-jou de Oyasumi but it's more of a comedy about a Princess kidnapped by the Demon King
1 Golf_wang7890 2018-06-07
What about Overlord?
1 Zero5urvivers 2018-06-07
Overlord is the exception, not the rule

1 EvMBoat 2018-06-07
Is good and I enjoy but I want more serious pacing too
1 Che_Gueporna 2018-06-07
Bullshit. New non-isekai fantasy anime continues to come out every season as always.
1 EvMBoat 2018-06-07
Very few and most are generic game spin off harem bs.
Manga even less.
1 HarryD52 2018-06-07
Goblin Slayer is good but it may as well just be Hentai at this point. It seems like the author can't go one fucking chapter without mentioning how much those pesky goblins love to rape women so much.
1 EvMBoat 2018-06-07
I have no experience with the light novel but if you've been reading the manga or the spinoff prequel manga the rape has quickly taken the backseat.
Certainly the author does seem to have a bit of an obsession over it but it doesn't feel nearly as prolific as the earlier chapters.
Also grimdark gore manga featuring a stoic protag with a sick helmet is 100% my niche.
1 HarryD52 2018-06-07
I haven't read any of the recent chapters so that would probably explain it, but yea I agree with you that it's nice to have a full on grimdark fantasy setting which is why I said I thought it was good.
1 Coco_Bandicock 2018-06-07

1 skeletalG0d 2018-06-07
yo is this sub new? I never noticed it on the homepage before but now it wont go away. Who ever is making posts for this is so petty, anything i've seen within this sub makes me hate this site. I can picture all the annoying people from every other corner of this site congregating here and circle jerking arguments to fill there daily catch of tears and cap locks. any one that likes this place I hate you and mostly and one else in your life probably hates you, low key or not.

This should be a Snappy quote.
1 westofthetracks 2018-06-07
Okay, this is epic.
1 shallowm 2018-06-07
Wow, I thought Japan was safe from the enforcement of political correctness by SJWs because they're a homogeneous society that doesn't have any (((diversity))). It's sad to see even Japan fall to the disease that is SJW ideology.
1 pitterpatterwater 2018-06-07
Tbh you're a retard if you don't think cancelling a comic because of hidden genocidal messages isn't just common sense.
1 Awayfone 2018-06-07
That thread is peak smug srdines. As usual
1 Pepperglue 2018-06-07
This really shows the directors of those animation companies are completely unaware of their source material. Who in their right mind would look at this and think "yup, this would go well with our Chinese viewers"?
1 LemonScore 2018-06-07
/u/makeitcool So you think that Americans should be suspicious of Japanese media because of Pearl Harbor? This is the kind of retarded reasoning that is weirdly acceptable when it comes from a left-wing imbecile yet would be mocked relentlessly as bigotry by SRD if they had any self-awareness.
/u/makeitcool Because you squinty-eyed yellow bastards fought against my pals MURRICA in the Korean War I downvote every Korean on reddit, hope you understand.
