Harem animus are about appealing to as many fans as possible by creating a large cast of girls and never favoring any one pairing. (Harem can have one girl and a lot of guys but thats almost as rare as a doujin artist not having at least one rape doujin.)

(Though not all harem anime and manga are necessarily bad and, if you ever get into japanese media, because of their large casts harem anime and manga can be fairly good jumping off points as they contain many of the tropes and character-types found in japanese media.)
