I'm hoping that later tonight my partner in the Redwall x HP Lovecraft themed RP I'm doing will be online, although she's been busy with guests this week. The last time she checked the word count, it turned out that our RP is now novel length at ~77,000. Nothing else too interesting going on beyond that planned for today.
Nah, neither of us like writing about food too much. One of the benefits of roleplaying in the Redwall universe is that most of it is unmapped, there's no concrete history, the way the limited amount of magic works is vague, and there's a few dark setting elements like a mysterious plague wiping out Loamhedge and foxes being said to carry the blood of a demon/godlike being that rules the Dark Forest.
Long and short of it is that the Lovecraftian stuff comes into play when a fleet of canine/vulpine supremacist pirates from the far east take over the ruins of Marshank, and turn out to be adherents to an ancient religion based around the worship of mostly standard fare Old Gods which lead to the destruction of their homeland after they ran dry of sacrifices and the crops were blighted. There's not anything that I'd consider more fantastical than what Jacques' already put in the setting beyond alchemy being a bit more potent and advanced than what's written in the actual books, and it's less "blood sacrifice to summon a tentacled abomination" and more "blood sacrifices/use of hallucinogens to call forth supernatural events or commune with their gods." Given how fast the invasion happens, the only ones capable of fighting back against it are a group of northern bandits as the Long Patrol is busy fighting in the Toadlands and the houses of Salamandastron refuse to believe the messages sent by fox-lead vermin criminals especially when it's set just months after the Marlfox crisis (refresher: "magic foxes" turned out to be not-so-magic).
Will eventually culminate in the cultists being wiped the fuck out when the spirits of Martin and other heroes from millennia past decide to take a more direct approach than leaving riddles for little children at the Redwall Abbey to solve. Wouldn't really consider it to be a grimdark RP or anything since it'll still resolve in a final conflict between good vs. evil (via the spirits/gods) as typical in the Redwall setting even if the morality is greyer while still roughly sticking to the species traits Jacques' laid out. A fox can still be dutiful and valorous, for example, just not for the same morally pure reasons a mouse would. Shit's at 77k+ words at this point.
