This person clearly spends too much time online, and so did some actually really good research and kept up-to-date with what's going on, even in small little communities like ours. He missed a couple of relevant events I think he might have wanted to bring up had he known about them, but overall, this is much higher quality research and writing than most newspaper articles you'll read.
I am slightly puzzled though by how close the author can come to getting that virtue signalling is not actually a good thing, and that you should actually be virtuous, not just pretend to be, but just doesn't get there. He actually admits that he's virtue signalling to his other white upper class hipster friends when he tags every tweet he makes with #BLM or #SaveTheWhales or #FreePalestine or whatever other pet cause he's picked up this week, but doesn't seem to get that pretending to be good so that other people like you more and actually doing good because you care about something are two different things.

There's no set "rules", of course, it's a figure of speech. They were the ones who opened the door to large scale social media outrage with the aim of getting somebody fired from their job or otherwise attempting to ruin their lives - and it's not always a celebrity, it's often just normal people. It is the literal definition of "Social Justice". The key point is that the contention they had with their "target" was always some mundane shit like an offensive joke or some perceived slight against a somebody that falls lower than them in the progressive stack. Basically "waah, you started it!".
They've been complaining about it for years and still do despite them doing the same thing - and when it happens to the left they complain too, despite them also doing it (as we can see with their latest "defeat" in Gunn). The user who had created the subreddit in the first place, david-me, then posted to r/Drama (a subreddit dedicated to tracing internal Reddit action and excitement) saying that he had shut down KIA.

Well, this isn't actually an awful article, even if I disagree with the conclusion. Obviously it's biased to a large extent, both in regards to Gunn (racist joke = racism, not joke, pedo joke = joke, not pedophilia? Hmmmmm) and in regards to Jessica Price (why is she here? She made an ass of herself on Twitter, as the author even admits, and got fired. GAMERGATE DID THIS, IT MADE HER CALL A POLITE IMPORTANT COMMUNITY MEMBER AN ASSHAT!) but if you ignore that, it's actually alright.
This person clearly spends too much time online, and so did some actually really good research and kept up-to-date with what's going on, even in small little communities like ours. He missed a couple of relevant events I think he might have wanted to bring up had he known about them, but overall, this is much higher quality research and writing than most newspaper articles you'll read.
I am slightly puzzled though by how close the author can come to getting that virtue signalling is not actually a good thing, and that you should actually be virtuous, not just pretend to be, but just doesn't get there. A thinkpiece is going to improve no one's lives. A joke that punches up accomplishes nothing. If all you're doing is creating the optics of caring without actually caring and doing things that actually help, you really are no better than someone opposed to the issue.
