The tale of Fansy

From 2001 in Everquest an early MMO.

Fansy the Famous bard was using a game mechanic to grief and kill higher level players on a PVP server.

He stayed under level 6 which made him immune to PVP, which was one of the few rules on this server.

He would then use a skill to make him run faster than any mob, grab a bunch of them and "train" them to where higher level players were.
These mobs were insanely difficult by today's standards and would essentially kill everyone.

This caused a lot of anger and hatred amongst people who spent way too much time in this game. Just trying to level up could take days and each death took away a considerable amount of experience.

Main Back and forth between players

Eventually after enough whining, a GM stepped in and told him to knock it off, and later a dev actually changed the game rules.

God damn this is an old one. I kinda miss the days of dropping a huge train on a zone in full of people and popping my Instant Evac skill.

This happened a lot in MMOs back then. I remember even Lineage 2 still had the training mechanic to some degree, and it was even worse there because when you died you had a chance to drop any item you had equipped.

You can see from this how successful autism awareness campaigns have been over the last 20 years. Back then, none of these kids knew the right words to call each other.

Wait, old, obscure internet drama?

But your name isn't snally?

Trying to be the change I want to see in /r/drama

Old MMO's were a gold mine for Drama. Probably because we had a lot of downtime...

One of my other favorites was the leader of a powerguild who decided in an epic rant he would threaten the devs to rage quit if they didn't bow to his mighty desires. He later went on to be hired as a designer for WoW.

Character named Furor, leader of the guild Fires of Heaven, and what would have made great pasta today....

You have 14 Days. If after that time the Plane is not properly tuned, I am deleting my characters, and cancelling all of my accounts. The rest of my guild will follow suit, as will several other guilds and people that play Everquest.

To be brief, I did not work my ass off, jumping through your idiotic hoops with my friends and guildmates, so I could go to a zone where only groups of 18 could enjoy the content. EVEN if past these initial moronic events I can finally get my entire guild in to raid with me, FUCK YOU GUYS. Seriously, FUCK YOU.

I cannot believe this... right now I'm just so pissed off. I am sitting here in the Plane of Time, and 3/4 of my guild is just sitting around while a group of 18 is repeatedly trying to beat one of the mini ring encounters. Don't you people have ANY FUCKING DECENCY? SMEDLEY WHY DON'T YOU STOP COUNTING YOUR MONEY AND START ISSUING ORDERS?

The tragic irony of creating the ultimate cockblock encounter in the form of the Rathe which requires 80 people to defeat and then to limit encounters in the Plane of Time to 18.

14 Days.... after that this site will change from the most popular EQ fan site on the internet to the most popular World of Warcraft fan site on the internet. I'm done playing ball with you useless fuckers... it's my turn.

I imagine there must have been a hell of a lot of butthurt over MUDs before EQ too. There were 1000+ and each was pretty small, so the potential for extremely petty leadership squabbles is astronomical.

Cheating and catfishing galore.

I never quite got into it enough to participate in all that, but looking back in hindsight, that explains a hell of lot.

bit late but he wound up working for Blizzard on World of Warcraft

You shout, '(((FANSY)))'

these guys were ahead of their time

[Sat Jul 07 14:12:08 2001] Grogg tells you, 'u really have no life but to train sg s on ppl, its just a game'

[Sat Jul 07 14:12:23 2001] You told Grogg, 'train simulators are games'

Man, that was some good trolling.

What's horrifying to me is I remember this happening. Wasted years.
