TBH I don't really understand being that dramatic about it. It's still the same person, who will have the same relationship with them and all. Being a parent to someone isn't really a gendered thing ( Well it is biologically, but there's so much more to being a parent than giving birth; Adoptive parents are parents, and sometimes biological parents don't deserve to be called any more than that ), it's not like that's questioning their sexual orientation or whatever.

And yeah, it's probably a strange thing to live through, but it's so much less than most of the stuff people have to go through in life. Like the guy above said, what if their mother had just died ? How would they be dealing with that ?

Honestly, therapy might be overkilling it, but if I had to tell them to consider therapy, it wouldn't be gender therapy, it'd be therapy for being unable to cope with a sizeable change in their life.
