Seems to me, the issue is one of two things:

  • The public really likes electing shitty people, so we are getting what we ask for.

  • You need to be some level of a shitty person to be a successful President.

I've been alive through several administrations now. The last non-shitty one I can remember was Carter, and to be fair, he wasn't all that successful, so maybe my second hypothesis is correct.
