Tl;dr : He is an outspoken gay that is anti immigration. He was responsible for the dediabolisation campaign of MLP, which changed how french saw her from literal nazi to racist authoritarian.

France actually gets a lot of international political power through its influence in its former colonies. Support in the UN, etc... They do it for a reason.
