Here in Russia, there is actually a lot of media criticizing the Kremlin. Some of them are even financed by the government (Echo MSK).
Pravda is 100% shilling for Russia on the international stage, but also often writes some critical materials like "The pension reform showed that Russia is a feudal". Also, IIRC, it was found that they had some links to the Nashi group (Russian anti-fa): their reporter participated in the raid on NazBols.
From what I've gathered, United Russia is actually kind of a centrist party (if you can even call it that, the politics are so different in Moscow). Putin and his securocrats are actually the guys standing between a nuclear stockpile and the next two most popular political parties, far-right nationalists/fascists (real fascists, Dugin level shit, not like the "fascists" we have here in the U.S.), and the USSR holdovers / younger generation Stalinists, both of which are larger than the liberals that the Western media loves to focus on (Navalny et al). Feel free to correct me where I'm wrong, the topic is fascinating to me.

True. Although it is a Big tent party: they have solid liberal economists as well as crazies who believe that Russia is a colony and ruled by the US.
far-right nationalists/fascists (real fascists, Dugin level shit, not like the "fascists" we have here in the U.S.)
I would rather call them 'populists'.
Actual nationalists may be popular among people but are suppressed by the government. Pretty much all of the radical ones are put in jail.

Russian and Western 'liberals' have vastly different political views.
Navalny is a national-democrat: pro-gun, anti-migration, anti-Islamization, sort of separation of the Caucasian region of Russia, etc. Pretty much all the 'liberal opposition' (young ones especially) is affected by these ideas, I see it everywhere in RuNet. Even increasingly popular Libertarian movement poses itself as anti-immigrant ('freedom to not associate')/anti-globalist and openly supports Trump.
P.S.: Western media focus on Navalny is especially ironic considering his statements about Jews and Gays.
Actual nationalists may be popular among people but are suppressed by the government.
I was trying to imply this with my "standing between" comment. It's funny how so many people in the West regard Putin as highly nationalist when he's actually holding back some of the actual hardcore nationalists, particularly the ones who kick up too much anti-minority sentiment.
Random fact: 60% of Putin's electorate are women.
My stepmom and her mother both liked Putin up until he divorced his wife, even though she's fairly "liberal" by Russian standards and spent lots of time in Western and Central Europe.
"> I do hope that Russians and Americans will remain friends no matter what.
I don't. I abhor your government and your people!
Actions speak louder than words and your nation has committed multiple, horrific acts of war against other foreign nation for years now. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you!
I am looking forward to the day where Russia is no longer part of this Planet's geography! ;-)
Go ahead and ban me, mods. I could not give less of a fuck."
my question is this, back in the soviet era, Pravda was an incredibly useful part of russian life due to shortage of actual toilet paper. Now that toilet paper is readily available what role does your paper play in russian society today?

We're mostly online.
I have to say, the rest of the ama was really cringy. Not because of pravda, because of the commenters. They were attacking the OP with such animosity you'd think he raped their dog or something.

Insides for radical centrists:

Just saying, Russian politics seems a lot more interesting than Anglo-American politics.
