I can safely say that's not true either. While perhaps it is true that it's more common in college, that's not even remotely always the case, and there are usually extenuating circumstances anyway.
Many of those not dating either aren't actively looking for a girlfriend or aren't putting themselves out there. When the ugly guy is sitting at home and studying every night, they obviously aren't going to be meeting anyone who might date them or might reject them. They've effectively taken themselves out of the dating pool.
And it should be said that a hot guy in the same situation is also unlikely to find someone to date.
Personality is also pretty important. If you're going around acting like all women are bitches who have it easy, do you really think women aren't going to pick up on it and not want to date you? Meanwhile, if you have a positive outlook and a good personality, it's pretty easy to find a relationship, even if you've got serious deformities. Many people are missing limbs, have massive scars or burns, are paraplegic, etc, and still manage to find partners. That is usually because they are still enjoyable people to be around who can keep their partner happy through humor and entertainment.
You don't need to be a paragon of male form to get dates in college. You just need to put yourself out there with people who aren't out of your league and not be a constant sourpuss and downer. Bonus points for getting into groups that share common interests with you/finding out an interest of someone and learning about it. That's a pretty surefire way for even a pretty disgusting person to find a dependapotamus-type to cuddle with at night.
