as an american, i remember spotting a show on my netflix i had never heard of called "Peep Show" starring those two gentlemen in the clip you have shared with me. well, if it wasn't one of the funniest sitcoms i had ever seen in my life.

Peep Show is awesome!

And if you enjoyed that show check out the other shows (they've got 4 or 5) by David Mitchell and Robert Webb.

Also here's a sub for them -> /r/MitchellAndWebb/

Peep Show really is awesome. you're absolutely right. or i remember it being so when i watched it 5 years ago.

I can only confidently guarantee that the prostitute you end up making tender love to (lol) will shower longer than she usually does after your 5 shameful minutes of disappointing her

The quickest way to know someone just voted in their first election while simultaneously never having paid attention in civics class; REEEE REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY!

imagine defending a retarded system this hard

Imagine if DJT could just pass his most outlandish bills easily and without resistance.

Thank god for gridlock.

Implying Donnie would've been elected in the first place if every vote were counted equally 🤔

How has the US never used the popular vote in any real capacity before!?

You can blame France, mostly.

Smh frankcels

The Constitution was ratified a year before the Parisian mob fired up the guillotine.

Well you can partially blame one French expat, but unfortunately for you, the French Revolution happened after America. In fact, American Independence inspired several aspects and leaders of the Revolution.

Dumbass.

Anyway the real reason popular vote wasn't implemented in the Constitution was the people ratifying it had some sense of self preservation and were effectively aristocrats.

Implying the campaign strategy wouldn't have been vastly different if we didn't have the electoral college.

I don't think Trump could've ever won if it wasn't for a system granting his core support base more power than the rest of the US...

But tbh I see the merits of the US system too, in some ways it's better than ours here in canada

It was not a popular vote campaign.

We don't need checks and balances because surely we will always be in power.

Reminds me of the European Union. The number of votes each country gets doesn't correspond linearly to population size.

It's almost like every upper house of government is supposed to represent some national territorial divisions or something. Trully a mystery for the ages...

Do you actually think anyone here does not understand how the senate works? Clearly they disagree with the system, they are not like totally unaware of it.

I don't and I'm here.

One day you'll learn how to read and comprehend the words... but until then we're stuck with posts like above.

REEEE REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY!

What could be unclear about that.

This election had tons of Democratic seats, of course the Democrats were gonna win the popular vote

Absolutely false. I lose track of how much REEEE I see on Reddit about lol a gerrymandered Senate.

In this case it's actually normal since the democrats won most of the senate seats that were up for elections yesterday but it's still funny to see retard amerifats trying to defend an unfair system because it's acshually a republic not a democracy.

Y-yeah but state representation is more important than equal power for each vote for some reason guys

Why are you serious posting?

because he has autism

this too tbh

look at all the replies, I'm just a nigga trying to cause some drama 😃

Y-yeah but state representation is more important than equal power for each vote

This but unironically

B-but direct democracy REEEEE

no but seriously I understand why the system needs to be like that since states are important etc but it's still unfair imo

New York and Urban California shouldn't decide every election

flyover state voters shouldn't have more voting power just because they decided to live in a less populated state

That headlines shows why they shouldnt let their German report write about the us election

Because not all states are up at once, the senate "popular vote" in any one state actually its not a good measure of how biased it is towards one party of the other due to disproportionate representation. If anything the senate has actually been less republican biased over the last decade than the house. There are a lot of small blue states that sort of balance things out.

Plus there was no republican at all running in California, which just makes the statistic even more useless.

Maybe you could calculate the bias by adding up the vote totals from the past three senate elections, that might give you a rough idea.

Some guy was telling me this was indeed a blue wave based on the popular vote.

I'm not a burger so, I'm not sure, is this correct??

No, it's not correct.

Before the election, Democrats were high on their own farts saying they'd get back control of both the house and the senate and even get a super majority in the house. Reality is that they have only managed to get a simple majority in the house, something like 51 or 52%.

It's like... they won the house at least, but this was more of a blue trickle or a blue garden hose rather than a wave.

No, this is a super bog standard election. The reverse happened when Obama was president. It always ends up similarly m

density level: truereddit poster

the senate doesn't represent you it represents state governments.

truereddit used to be good

have they gotten any less smug

Democrats win 39/69 million votes and 27/35 seats - seems more than """"fair"""" to me

Imaging being so fucking retarded that you think winning a popular vote means you necessarily have to gain votes.

Especially when some of those votes like in CA were dem vs dem. Every single vote in those elections went to the democrats' "popular vote" count 😂

some of those votes like in CA were dem vs dem

in...the primary? in local elections with multiple seats?

wat?

Open primary, top 2 go on to the midterm

right but that would have been a while ago? or does CA somehow do primaries on the same day as the midterm?

Primary: vote for who you want

Top 2: go on to midterm regardless of party

November: Vote for one of the two winners

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/06/us/elections/results-california-elections.html

Notice than many of the races were D vs D or R vs R

Oh I get it now

How did it take you this long to figure this out?

That is not how it works in any of the states I live in

u/ trumpismysaviour (interesting spelling. so American) is one dumb motherfucker jesus christ

Whining without understanding the political system is as true Reddit as it gets

How to explain to someone living abroad that Democrats can have over 10 million more Senate votes and still lose

I don't know, just tell them "It's a Senate" and they'll understand, since it's not like it's a uniquely American institution.

because of rurals having disproportionate power, fuck you people, no matter how hard you try to resist our democratic plot will work out and you are going to end up in 5 to 7 feet apartments while slaving away in cubicles 12 hours a day

i’m highly in favor of regional “states’” rights, but it doesn’t make sense that people in North Dakota have disproportionate control over federal laws because they live in North Dakota.

The dumbest hot take of the day, and it's only 6 AM!

States should have strong rights and representation, so long as they don't get any say in matters that concern me!

-Reddit, probably

What's so difficult with "Every state gets 2 senators?"

But why shouldn’t California get an extra one? It’s population is huge and yet so right

The only thing California should "get" is a nuke or two.

I thought you wanted the whole US to get nuked.

Indeed I do, but I'd like to savour the moment by taking it one state at time.
