Dude, a lot of the first wave stuff is excellent. Converge has a split record with Agoraphobic Nosebleed for christssake, If that isn't being accepted as "heavy" then I don't know what is. Unless you're one of those weirdos that only listens to drone and doom metal and measure musical heaviness by how likely you are to vomit from the sheer volume of a live set.

I'm loathe to claim I like it as a genre, but I'm pretty partial to a lot of the late 90s/early 2000s stuff like Botch and Heart Stops-era Cave In. In [current year] though it definitely seems like the -core suffix is just shorthand for kids with neck tats who want to be in metal bands but can't play their instruments very well. Or they're Attila.

Have you heard the new Pig Destroyer album? It's a pretty significant departure from their previous work. There are still some blastbeats and grind elements, but it's much meatier and groovier than I expected, like if they had a baby with Pantera and that baby didn't suck. They even got a bassist.
