At first, it was great. We'd already known eachother for 3 years beforehand, and we loved each other very much. I especially enjoyed her quick wit. We both keep current on news events, particularly politics, and it was always fun to have a debate with her every now and again, and have her take on things.
She is a republican, and I'm more libertarian Jan democrat, but definitely more democrat than republican.
We met around when Obama came into office. See, at this time, it was fine to talk with her about the President, about what he did. We disagreed, but she was never nasty. She didn't agree with the Obamacare, I did, and she said something along the lines of "I can see your points, and I hope you can see mine too."
But things have changed since late 2016, when Trump started ramping up his campaign and came into office... Over the latter part of 2016 she became...fanatical.
I'd come home from my job (nurse) and she'd be watching some fox news show about Trump, or some Trump based show, or reading about Trump... Every single night.
Before, we had nice little debates about politics, citing facts and statistics. I remember in 2017, we were talking about immigration in America, and I was citing a case where some state nearly had their agricultural sector collapse due to the pushing out of illegal immigrants (who made up the labour for that state's agriculture industry), and you know what she said?
"Good. They should all go back to whatever rock they crawled out from under."
I remember being a bit shocked. This was a woman who in 2015 (or 2014) said that immigrants who really needed help should be allowed to stay in America.
She has done a complete 180.
She makes very outwardly racist snide remarks, such as the aforementioned, and things like "Good. They're all just leeches anyway." And "police officers only shoot black criminals - it's not their fault most black people are criminals". We've been out shopping before, and she has scoffed at a woman who had a very thick mexican accent, and when I asked her what the issue was, she said "well they just come in droves, don't they?"
She would have NEVER said these things before 2016. Not a chance in hell.
I've told her about this. I've told her how much she has changed. How hateful she has become. How much she seems to just be afraid about everything, and use anger to lash out against it. How she shouldn't say, think or do racism or push human beings out to worse lives. How she shouldn't keep regurgitating the insane conspiracy things certain people keep harping on about. This is what she said.
"I'm just being an American. If you don't like it, you know where the door is."
I'm a bit ashamed to say I cried a bit that night. I feel like my wife is gone.
She used to be so loving, kind, with respectable principles, even if we didn't see eye to eye.
She has also since lost about 90% of her friends on account of how nasty she has become.
