Historically and logically, that's exactly how it works, though.

If a bunch of racists start jokingly giving each other the ok sign as a way of self-identifying as racist within their in-group, it does, in fact, become a racist gesture and will eventually be deemed socially unacceptable.

Before Nazis existed, American schoolkids were taught to use the Roman/Bellamy salute during the pledge of allegiance. Nazis and Italian fascists started to use it to identify themselves, so Congress passed a law telling the kids to start putting their hand over their heart instead and now the Roman/Bellamy salute is just called the Nazi salute and people using it are universally recognized as Nazis. It didn't have anything to do with fascism until the fascists started using it, but became the ultimate symbol of fascism by virtue of its use.

The response to these retarded alt-right kiddies using the ok sign as a self-identifier shouldn't be "normies are stupid for thinking the ok sign is racist"; it should be "edgelords are stupid for turning the ok sign into something racist."
