They aren't "foreign" enough to be treated like a foreigner (i.e. given a pass on knowing language or culture and stuff and easy "jobs" teaching English or marketing shit or whatever) but they aren't Asian enough to be accepted by the locals.
yeah, I've seen how the locals react to these poor fuckers speaking mandarin. It's hilarious. Sometimes they get treated like a mentally retarded person, or get asked if they're Korean, or worst still, Japanese. The ones who can speak mandarin relatively well (but still with a slight accent) get treated with the most suspicion.

I've ran into a few well-to-do ABCs in business development or sales roles on the mainland, but most of those guys were simply lucky enough to have extended family members with with the right political ties / guanxi
