One of the most satisfying things I've done lately is restyle a legacy website. I learned a lot about color their here. First thing I tried was to base it around hsl complementary colors. Then I realized it looked like hot garbage. Because hsl is ultimately just our monitors spectrum shoved into a cylinder, but that's not how we see. Then I moved on to lab, which is based on human vision, I discovered a thousand different colors I'd ignored all my life, I'd spend hours creating palettes full of nearly indistinguishable shades that somehow vastly changed the look when used, they're true complements, their "half complements", and how important all the desaturated light colors that usually get ignored and shoved into the center of hsl are. CSS really is like painting with a brush. It's unfortunate that so many who use it are just kids slinging paint at the canvas.
They've done studies you know, programming actually relies more on the language part of the brain than the mathematical part. That's because most usable languages (i.e. Basically everything besides assembly) are ultimately based on chomskys universal syntax that describes human language itself. I remember seeing a lot of programmers who were ticked off when they read that article, programmers have giant egoes in general. It's all in that last one. Any engineer can follow a procedure, but a good engineer can optimize and extrapolate based on what they already have.
As a programmer the first time I program just about anything I'm copying and pasting. But that technique I used gets added to my toolset, whereas previously I probably had to spend a ton of time when figuring what technique was appropriate or best, or even what my problem really is and what sort of question I should actually be asking, in the future when I need to solve a simialiar problem I know where to look again act can just zero in on it. And eventually I have it memorized. Like when I first stated I was so clueless about sql, I basically couldn't do anything but follow formulas by rote. Now I can throw together complex joins with aggregates functions and ctes on the fly. People often seem to forget that rote repetition does indeed eventually work. Like when you learn words from anther language by rote, and listen to dialogue that uses them, you start learning other words by piecing things together.
Joke's on you, most of machine learning these days isn't even supported by mathematical theory. We legit just throw things together because "it makes sense" then show it produces 5% improvement on some dataset.

Badly designed random forrests can get 7% error.
Kernel regression can get 2% error. That was developed in 1964, and a lot of research since then has improved the computational complexity. I probably couldn't get 2% in the 98 seconds the other guy needed for his 14%, but I can definitely get 3% in 10 minutes.

I'm going to take her side in this. Not because she's right, but because /r/iamverysmart is so cancerously narcissistic that she's probably one of the most humble and down-to-earth people involved in the drama.
Was she planning on working on both her astrophysics and intelligence work at the same time? Probably not. She's one of those people who feel the need to brag about everything. Also the pics of her with code makes it even more obvious.
I had a look on scopus and ADS to check her record as astrophysicist. I found no Amber Roberts on scopus, and the only relevant A Roberts on ADS published only on un-refereed journals
Idk what type of AI this lady is doing but for awhile i was also doing some horse shit AI work and unless you're doing colossal neural networks of self learning faggotry (which she's not) then you don't need a seperate laptop. Fuckin Raspberry Pis use SciPy for simple AI like image recognition or tracking things and whatever the fuck else. Smh

Pretty much every programmer I've ever met is actually a bit dim. They just tend to have that autism spectrum focus on repetitive tasks/keeping numbers in your head that helps them connect the legos together day after day which actual people would find way too tedious.

This is true some of the time, but a lot of being a good engineer (at least in my experience in avionics) is making tools that handle the most repetitive shit for you so that you spend as little time as possible doing the trained monkey stuff and more time diagnosing and correcting more complex tasks. Also, the ability to ramp up quickly in something you don't have previous experience with is pretty important and not for idiots.

Chaining functions that each do monkey tasks to other functions that do monkey tasks, is just abstraction on top of monkey tasks.

Keeping numbers in your head? Lol. It's not accounting. I hardly think of individual numbers at all. It's also hardly repetitive in my experience, like some of the basic IT tasks required to keep the site running are repetitive, but that's hardly the whole job and it really isn't programming.
One of the most satisfying things I've done lately is restyle a legacy website. I learned a lot about color their here. First thing I tried was to base it around hsl complementary colors. Then I realized it looked like hot garbage. Because hsl is ultimately just our monitors spectrum shoved into a cylinder, but that's not how we see. Then I moved on to lab, which is based on human vision, I discovered a thousand different colors I'd ignored all my life, I'd spend hours creating palettes full of nearly indistinguishable shades that somehow vastly changed the look when used, they're true complements, their "half complements", and how important all the desaturated light colors that usually get ignored and shoved into the center of hsl are. CSS really is like painting with a brush. It's unfortunate that so many who use it are just kids slinging paint at the canvas.
They've done studies you know, programming actually relies more on the language part of the brain than the mathematical part. That's because most usable languages (i.e. Basically everything besides assembly) are ultimately based on chomskys universal syntax that describes human language itself. I remember seeing a lot of programmers who were ticked off when they read that article, programmers have giant egoes in general. They want to believe themselves hardcore members of le stem master race, and that programming is just math. They speak a language that solely consists of the imperative mode, pedantically describing each step in the process to their slave.
Tbh I think a lot of computer scientists would do a lot better if they spent a little more time reading linguistics or liberal arts in general, they're not complete human beings.

As a programmer the first time I program just about anything I'm copying and pasting. But that technique I used gets added to my toolset, whereas previously I probably had to spend a ton of time when figuring what technique was appropriate or best, or even what my problem really is and what sort of question I should actually be asking, in the future when I need to solve a simialiar problem I know where to look again act can just zero in on it. And eventually I have it memorized. Like when I first stated I was so clueless about sql, I basically couldn't do anything but follow formulas by rote. Now I can throw together complex joins with aggregates functions and ctes on the fly. People often seem to forget that rote repetition does indeed eventually work. Like when you learn words from anther language by rote, and listen to dialogue that uses them, you start learning other words by piecing things together.

It's definitely not bullshit. With some directions provided this could be a project at the end of a first ML course. Could also be she did it all on her own, that requires a better understanding than if it's somewhat guided. And the difficulty is always in the details, so from just glancing at the code it's hard to say if this is a good solution or not.

Linear OLS gets 14% error on MNIST. That's not "not so bad", that's really really bad.
Badly designed random forrests can get 7% error.
Kernel regression can get 2% error. That was developed in 1964, and a lot of research since then has improved the computational complexity. I probably couldn't get 2% in the 98 seconds the other guy needed for his 14%, but I can definitely get 3% in 10 minutes.
Econometrics is an application of mathematical statistics to problems from economics.
Machine learning is basically mathematical statistics with less mathematical rigor. Sadly, a lot of ML is just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks, especially the media-hyped stuff.
So of course econometrics will make use of advances in mathematical statistics coming from ML, just like machine learners make use of mathematical statistics advances from econometrics.
