For anyone not a complete degenerate, everyone in the series is completely broken or a complete asshole, or both. Shinji (the main character, a teenage boy) is a completely broken cowardly incel. Asuka (one of the female characters Shinji will never grow the balls to ask out) is a crazy bitch and also completely broken with more daddy issues than Shinji. Then there's Rei who is a clone of Shinji's mother, and was raised with Shinji's father as a father-figure, and Shinji kind of has a thing for her, so she's almost as messed up as the average NGE fan.
